73
Report of the Superintendent of Schools
To the School Committee and Citizens
of the Town of Mashpee:
The County health unit of the Massachusetts Department
of Public Health has for a number of years provided outstand-
ing health service for Mashpee, but since September the ser-
vice has been limited. The County Health Officer, Dr. Fred
L. Moore, is still school physician and has given assurance
that this phase of the health work will not be neglected.
Until June of last year we had the services of a splendid
school nurse, Miss Mildred Wye. You know of her work from
reading the very interesting report that she gave to the town
each year. Except for a little work by nurses of the Falmouth
Nursing Association and the fluorine treatment of teeth by
Mrs. Kenneth Downey of the Massachusetts Department of
Public Health, we have had no school nursing service during
the current school year. In addition to the loss of the school
nursing service, the town has lost the public health nursing
done by Miss Wye. Something must be done this year to rem-
edy the situation. We have conferred with Dr. Moore who
has suggested that the School Department include in its
budget the sum of $250 for school nursing service and that
the Board of Selectmen include in its budget a similar sum
for public health work. Dr. Moore believes that we would be
able to secure personnel from the Falmouth Nursing Associa-
tion to carry on the work. Dr. Moore's suggestion is a wise
one. We know that the health teaching of the school nurse
has resulted in school children acquiring some fine health
habits, such as personal cleanliness and the fundamental
health habit of taking care of their teeth. In connection with
dental care, we have been fortunate in securing the services
of Dr.Myron A. Policow, who maintains offices in Bourne and
r
i
