99
Principal's Report
Mr. Wilfred H. Graves
Acting Superintendent of Schools
The annual report of the Samuel G. Davis School is here-
with submitted. I would like this year to deviate from the
regular type of report and outline briefly in the space allotted
to me the work done in Geography in our school, together
with a statement concerning the aims of the reading program
in the first two grades. Somehow I feel that a better under-
standing of our problems will be reached if parents know
more about the aims and objectives toward which the school
is working.
Today,we, as Americans, are confronted with a "changing
world" which not only affects our present but our future as
well. We must realize that nations are very much dependent
on resources for life. Nations are unequally supplied with
these resources. Nations each year are more and more in-
terdependent. Therefore, a keener sense of understanding of
other people is necessary, and there is a moral obligation to
share resources and recognize the advantages and disadvan-
tages of this sharing.
In all grades special attention is given, when possible, to
the development of good study habits, such as working in-
dependently, working in group activities, organizing and
evaluating materials, using indexes, graphs, maps, pictures,
and reporting to the group both orally and in writing.
In Grade 1, we generally study under three general units:
The Home, The Farm, and The School.
