107
Dr. Alfred Compton, from Falmouth, examined five pre-
school children prior to entering school in September. We
were pleased with the interest shown. Every child eligible
to attend was present and in every instance the mother
accompanied the child. This made for a much more valu-
able experience for both the mother and the physician, and
the resultant school health record is therefore more meaning-
ful. Dental caries was the outstanding defect. I hope we
may be able to provide more dental care to the children of
Mashpee. It would be ideal if we could start this care short-
ly after their third birthday. Nurse-teacher conferences
were held during the year in conjunction with the health rec-
ord and on individual children as the need arose. Routine
i school physicals were given by Dr. Fred L. Moore, County
Health Officer, to the pupils in the third, fifth, and eighth
grades, all new pupils in the school system, and others who, af-
ter nurse-teacher conferences, seemed to warrant it. Home
visits were made to complete the follow-up and the mothers
seemed to appreciate the interest shown in the welfare of
their child.
a All pupils were tested, using the Mass. Vision Test and the
Mass.Pure Tone Hearing Test. We are pleased to report that
all who failed were examined by otologists and opthamolo-
gists. We are grateful to the Cape Cod Hospital, Dr. Stuart
Strong and the Mashpee health fund for making this possible.
These screening tests lose their value unless follow-up by a
competent physician is possible, in order to correct the de-
fect before it becomes more of a handicap.
In February, fourteen infants and children were immu-
nized by Dr. Fred L. Moore against diphtheria, pertussis, and
tetanus. Eleven received booster doses and twenty-one were
vaccinated against smallpox. In May, fourteen first and
second grade pupils received an injection of Salk Polio Vac-
cine. All but one parent gave their permission. Later in the
Year, six children from the fourth grade were boostered with
I'
triple antigens. No first graders were included in this
group as all had had booster doses within the past year.
During the summer, eight children availed themselves of
i
I
