86
but not least, it is due to the goodly number of girls and boys
who have continued their studies beyond high school and
have helped by setting an example for them to follow.
Each year we give to all pupils several "standardized
tests" which give a general measure of each pupil's attain-
ment in a subject. These tests are valuable in measuring the
progress of each pupil from grade to grade. They aid in
determining whether each pupil is working up to capacity.
They may also be used in the improvement of instruction,
The results help to ascertain whether various subjects are
receiving the proper relative emphasis. In the light of these
results teachers are able to evaluate steps necssary in plan-
ning their teaching for the following year.
Our cafeteria has continued to operate efficiently, giving
wholesome meals in a pleasant surrounding at a minimum
cost. It is imperative that parents encourage their children
to eat at the lunchroom. Even though our yearly report shows
a small profit, we could not operate it without Federal re-
imbursement and generous surplus commodities. With the
addition of a new gas range and an upright food freezer, the
School Department has improved the efficiency of this pro-
ject immensely. We try to make the lunch period a vital
educational experience of the pupils. The meals are care-
fully planned and the menus are changed each day. Teachers
act as host or hostesses at the various tables and an attempt
is made to teach and to enforce high standards of etiquette
and to make in every way the lunch period an enjoyable,
health-contributing and socializing experience.
No report would be complete without mentioning whole-
heartedly the outstanding work of our school nurse, Mrs.
Robert Kendall, and the contributions she has made in looking
" out for the health needs of our children.A complete dental ex-
amination of each student has been made and then reported to
I the parents. The School Committee has increased the dental
{
equipment so that the community may be better served. Dr.
George W. DeMello has been most helpful in serving as
Chairman of our Dental Advisory Committee.
