29 <br /> applications reduce decay considerably. Mrs. Dalzell also did <br /> a dental survey to determine the number of carious teeth <br /> among the school children. The results of this survey were <br /> used as a guide in planning for ;the number of clinics. The <br /> needed work far exceeded what could be done in the 24 <br /> clinics regularly scheduled for the year, and the Board of <br /> Health generously allowed money for ten extra clinics. Using <br /> the new policy and a flexible means test, we hope to give <br /> adequate care in 24 clinics in 1959. Twelve clinics will be held <br /> in the Spring and twelve in the Fall. A great deal of dental <br /> education is needed. The primary responsibility for the health <br /> and well being of school children, of course, rests with par- <br /> ents. We would like to see more ,parents assume the responsi- <br /> bility for dental care of their children through their private <br /> dentists. The children would then grow up with an awareness <br /> of the importance of good dental hygiene. <br /> Health supervision and counselling is a very important <br /> part of the program. One of the main objectives of the nurse <br /> in her visit to the home of an infant or pre-school child, is <br /> to stress the importance of continuous well child medical <br /> supervision. Most of the pre-school children in Mash-pee are <br /> under good supervision <br /> When visiting the -adult, she stresses the promotion of <br /> health and the prevention of disease in order to meet sucess- <br /> i <br /> fully the problems of ageing and the increase in ,chronic dis- <br /> ease. <br /> i <br /> In doing school nursing she must bear in mind the fact <br /> that the older school child of today is the parent and citizen <br /> i <br /> of tomorrow and during this period the individual is prepar- <br /> ing himself for living tomorrow. <br /> I feel there are no special health problems in Mashpee. <br /> The mothers are eager for any service which will improve <br /> the health of their family. <br /> I wish to express my thanks to the Board of Health for <br /> their cooperation and interest, Mrs. Frank Hicks, for her <br /> invaluable work as a volunteer in the dental clinics, the school <br />
