i <br /> Report of the Director of Public Works <br /> To the Honorable Board of Selectmen and Citizens of the Town of Mashpee <br /> In 2009, the Department of Public Works performed its normal operations for maintaining the <br /> town roads and properties including Heritage Park, South Cape Beach, the Transfer Station, and <br /> the cemeteries. On July 1, the DPW assumed maintenance of the school buildings and grounds, j <br /> as required by the Town Charter. Former school maintenance workers and custodians were <br /> transferred to the DPW with the corresponding salary and expense funding. An improvement <br /> expected with this change is a consolidation of resources and staff between all Town properties, <br /> allowing for a more cost efficient operation. <br /> Below are highlights of several specific activities during the past year. <br /> Road Proiects <br /> Reconstruction of Old Barnstable Road, from Lowell Road to Payamps Road, was completed in <br /> Spring 2009, as was reconstruction of Asher's Path and Orchard Road. Funding for the projects .: <br /> was provided through Chapter 90. Also in Spring 2009, Timberlane Road was resurfaced and <br /> drainage improvement implemented. The drainage improvements included elimination of <br /> several locations where storm water was directly discharged to Santuit Pond. This project was <br /> funded through the 2004 Road Bond. <br /> Conversion of the roads in the Bayridge neighborhood off Mashpee Neck Road from private to <br /> Town was completed in Fall 2009. These roads include Simons Narrows Road, Yardarm Drive, <br /> Spinnaker Drive, Half Hitch Lane, and Starboard Drive. <br /> tia» <br /> Special Proiects <br /> i <br /> Construction of four new playing fields at Heritage Park was continued (two soccer, one <br /> baseball, one softball). Completion of the project is expected in late Spring 2010. Funding for <br /> this project was provided through the Community Preservation Act. <br /> Construction of Phase I of a Community Garden was completed in May 2009. Phase I included <br /> provision of 10 raised garden beds and water. Funding for a second phase was approved in <br /> October through the Community Preservation Act and will be completed in Spring 2010. <br /> Full operation of the fuel depot constructed at the DPW which was completed in early 2009 <br /> began on July 1. All Town departments use the facility for both gasoline and diesel fuel. <br /> Design of a sidewalk along the entire length of Great Neck Road North began in Fall 2009. <br /> Completion of the design is scheduled for 2010. Construction will be undertaken shortly i f <br /> thereafter in conjunction with reconstruction of the road. <br /> Transfer Station <br /> i <br /> In 2009, the Town of Mashpee delivered 5,201 tons of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) to i <br /> SEMASS through the Upper Cape Regional Transfer Station. This amount includes both the <br /> tonnage collected at the Transfer Station as well as the tonnage collected by private haulers <br /> 155 <br />
