Final Study Report <br /> Mashpee Historic District <br /> Page 11 of 15 <br /> Lower Main Street (MHC Area E) (note: the local district boundaries. include fewer <br /> resources than the area form). <br /> Main Street(Great Neck Road North to Cotuit Road) <br /> 273 Main Street (MHC 94), built circa 1930, is a small one-story,-side-gable, Vernacular/Cape <br /> residence set on concrete block piers. The main block has an asymmetrical three-bay facade and <br /> faces south. The primary entrance is offset, in line with an interior chimney located at the ridge. <br /> The chimney has been boxed in with vertical wood boards. The building is clad.in clapboard and <br /> hasan asphalt shingled roof. A one-story, shed-roof, enclosed porch is attached to the west <br /> elevation of the main block. Fenestration consists of 6/6 double-hung sash windows with plain + <br /> trim. The house is set approximately 70 feet from the road, and has a driveway located to the <br /> northwest of the house. <br /> The Lisbon Johnson House at 278 Main Street (MIiC 95) built circa 1840, is a one- and one- <br /> half-story, side-gable, Vernacular/ Cape residence set on a subsequently poured concrete <br /> foundation. The main block has an asymmetrical facade (north elevation) and is four bays wide <br /> and two bays in depth. A one-story, shed-roof porch with square posts extends along the facade. <br /> Fenestration consists of 6/9 and 6/6 double-hung sash windows with simple wood surrounds and <br /> wood shutters. The exterior wall fabric is wood shingle and clapboards, and the roof sheathing is <br /> asphalt. A shed-roof dormer pierces the front roof slope. An exterior, brick chimney is located <br /> on the west elevation. The building has a large, modern, one- and one-half-story, gable-roof ell <br /> attached to the.southwest corner of the main block. The ell is similar in style and construction <br /> materials to the main block and has shed-roof dormers on its east roof slope. The property is in <br /> excellent condition and includes a large, one-and one-half-story, gable-roof Barn (MHC 96) to <br /> the east. A one-story, shed-roof ell projects from the north elevation of the barn. I <br /> In a story of his life, neighbor Oliver Harlow said Lisbon Johnson was a cook on the same <br /> whaler Harlow crewed on. Born in Maryland in 1792, Johnson married, .as his second wife, <br /> Nancy Jones Squib. Nancy willed the house to her husband and it was later sold to Henry and <br /> Harriet Smith. In the 1930s, John Walker purchased the house and it was known by locals as j <br /> "the Willa Walker house." William Pompey lived in the house for many years. <br /> The Jones/Pocknett Homestead at 262 Main Street (NLHC 7), built in the mid 19d' century/before <br /> 1858, is a small one- and one-half-story, end-gable, Greek Revival-style building set to the east <br /> of the Lisbon Johnson House at 278 Main Street. It is a typical, although largely unaltered <br /> example of its type in the survey area. The main block has an asymmetrical three-bay facade <br /> (north elevation) and is two bays deep. The primary entrance is set in the east bay of the facade. <br /> Fenestration consists of 6/6 double-hung sash windows with plain surrounds. The building is set <br /> on a brick foundation that has been parged with cement. The exterior wall fabric is sheathed in <br /> wood shingles and asphalt shingles cover the roof. A two-bay,hip-roof dormer projects from the <br /> west roof slope. An interior, brick chimney is centrally located on the west roof slope. A small, <br /> one-story, one-by-one-bay, gable-roof ell is attached to the rear of the building. A bulkhead is i. <br /> located on the west elevation of the main block. The building is embellished with plain <br /> cornerboards, cornice, and modest returns. The property is fair in condition and includes a <br /> wood-frame lancet arch boathouse, under construction, located in the southeast corner of the lot. <br />
