Final Study Report <br /> Mashpee Historic District <br /> Page 12 of 15 <br /> The Jones/Pocknett House was built for Mary Foller Jones, wife of Isaac Jones on land <br /> purchased from Matthias Amos, on land granted to him in 1842. Mary's parents were Oliver <br /> Foller and Betsey Hersch (daughter of George Rudolphus Hersch, one of several American <br /> Revolution soldiers who settled in South Mashpee at the war's end in 1783. Mary's sisters also <br /> built homes east of hers on Main Street Sarah Foller Butler and Ann Foller Sewall. Isaac and <br /> Mary's daughter, Ann, married Frederick D. Jonas. Ann .died in 1929. Their daughter Elsie <br /> Jonas Piper married Willard Pocknet, son of Annie Attaquin and Willard Pocknet. <br /> The First Pentecostal Church at 258 Main Street (MHC 6), built in 1930, is a large'one-story, <br /> end-gable building with modest Gothic Revival-style detailing. Attached to the rear (south) of <br /> the building is a large, two-story, gable-roof addition set on a concrete foundation. The <br /> building's primary entrance is offset within a one-story, gable-roof projection on the facade <br /> (north elevation). The entrance consists of paired wood doors with plain wood surrounds. <br /> Fenestration consists of 1/1 double-hung sash, sliders, and two diamond pane windows on the <br /> facade. The foundation is cobblestone and concrete. The exterior wall fabric is vertical board <br /> and stucco, and the roof sheathing is asphalt shingle. A concrete block chimney is located on the <br /> Nv, <br /> north side of the ell.. Other notable exterior architectural features include exposed rafters. <br /> Alterations to the original appearance of the structure include the large two-story addition with <br /> wood decking on the rear of the building. 'The building has a small dirt parking lot to the east <br /> and is set back 15 feet from the street. - <br /> The A-Glass Shop, Inc, formerly the Old Post Office at 231 Main Street (MHC 5), which was <br /> built or moved to this site in the late 1940s, is a small, one-story, end-gable commercial building <br /> with a gable-roof, concrete block rear addition that is double the size of the main block. The <br /> main block has a symmetrical three-bay facade (south elevation) and is one bay in depth. The <br /> primary entrance is centrally-located on the south elevation of the main block and consists of a <br /> modern door with a six.-pane window. Fenestration consists of single, plate glass windows and <br /> one small double-hung window.' The building sits on a concrete foundation; the exterior wall <br /> fabric is aluminum siding, and the roof sheathing is asphalt shingle. The main block is flanked <br /> by vehicular entrances on the south elevation of therear addition. Alterations to the original <br /> appearance of the building include the large rear addition and the plate glass windows. The <br /> li property is in fair condition and is surrounded by a small parking lot on its south and west sides. <br /> i The building is set back approximately 40 feet from the street. <br /> The Earl H. Mills Sr. House at 224 Main Street (MHC 92); built in 1926, is a two-story, hip- <br /> roof, Vernacular/ Foursquare. The main block has a symmetrical three-bay facade (north <br /> elevation) and is two bays in depth. Aone-story, hip-roof addition extends off of the east side of <br /> the building. Fenestration consists of a combination of 1/1 and 3/1 double-hung sash windows, <br /> as well as one single pane window on the north elevation. The building stands on a concrete <br /> foundation, the walls are covered with asbestos shingles, and the roof sheathing is asphalt <br /> shingle. An interior, brick chimney rises from the center of the roof and an exterior concrete <br /> block chimney is located on the west elevation. A one-story, hip-roof, enclosed porch extends <br /> along the full width of the facade. A one-story, end-gable garage sheathed in clapboard is <br /> located southwest of the house. The windows on the garage are 6/6 double-hung sash A <br /> driveway on the west edge of the property leads to the garage. <br /> r. <br />
