67
Report of the Superintendent of Schools
To the School Committee and Citizens
of the Town of Mashpee:
Herewith is submitted my twenty-seventh report as
Superintendent of Schools of the Town of Mashpee. It has
been my practice to note significant non-routine procedures
of the year and to outline out-of-ordinary needs, plans, and
programs. The past year has brought few such changes but it
has been a year characterized by steady progress along lines
previously established.
No doubt the most significant event of the past year is
that the Superintendent was able to have a trained, successful
teacher in each of the classrooms. Each of our teachers has
the interests of the pupils at heart and is devoting many hours
of service, not only within the regular school day, but also in
after-school hours. From my observations since September, I
feel certain that the school year 1953-1954 will be one of
Progress in every grade.
We are happy to report that we again have a dental clinic.
Dr.James F. Volker of Sandwich is the dentist in charge, and
he is using equipment furnished by the Barnstable County
Health Association. During the coming year we expect that
most of the children will have the necessary dental care.
Through the co-operation of Dr. Moore, we were able to
have the services of Miss Susich as school nurse. She has
done splendidly. Among her tasks were the ear-testing pro-
gram, using the Puretone Audiometer, and the testing of eyes
by the use of the Massachusetts Vision Test. She has been
very co-operative and has answered every request for health
service. For the year 1954 we are engaged in a co-operative
effort with the Selectmen in the employment of a nurse who
Will serve as school and district nurse.
