a 68
During the past year there have been many times when
there has been comment about the education of the high
school students of Mashpee. I presume this is because this is
a real problem in a small town, especially when so many
attend high school. I wish to record the fact that the attend-
ance of the Mashpee pupils during the past year, by and large,
has been very fine. Many of the students are doing well.
The cost of this education is a major part of the school
budget. A recent letter indicates that this cost will be sub-
stantially increased for Falmouth has notified us that they
are increasing the tuition rate from $150 to $290 per pupil
effective as of January 1, 1954. This means that approxi-
mately 25% of the school budget will be spent for high
s
school tuition. Of course we are fortunate that Falmouth is
willing toaccept such a large group of children and also that
the curriculm at Falmouth is so diversified that our young
people have an opportunity to choose the program best suited
to their interests and capacities. Since the cost of this edu-
cation is very high, the School Committee will expect the
i students to make the most of the opportunity that is pre-
sented. If it appears that a child does not intend to make
i' every effort to make a success of his high school career, the
Committee will have to consider whether or not it will be
responsible for tuition charges. It is therefore paramount
that each parent does his part in insisting that his children
jA go to school regularly and do their best to do the work
assigned.
Of course the citizens of Mashpee know that we have had
a school lunch program, whereas in most towns the size of
Mashpee such is not the general rule. We believe that the
j, school lunch is an, important part of our program.
The
number who have meals is small, the cost of operation is high.
The School Committee has included in its budget a sum of
In to help pay the cost of milk and $5.00 per week toward
the salary of the lunchroom manager. These expenditures
r are in accordance with the laws of the Commonwealth, and
we believe them to be a wise procedure.
So far as the physical events of the past year are con
roofing ofcerned, there is no question but that our weather-p
ti`
