69
the school building is of major importance. We are happy to
report that for the first time since the school was built we
have a water-tight building. We were fortunate in securing
such a low bid for the east and north walls that there was
money enough left in the appropriation to do the building in
its entirety. All the flashings were put in first-class condition,
all the window and door openings and lintels were caulked,
brick walls were re-painted, and the entire brick and cement
areas were water-proofed. The foundation walls were re-
paired. The roof and cupola were made water-tight, and
every shingle was cemented. The work has been guaranteed
for five years.
We were also able to do some inside painting. The inside
hall and one room were re-painted. In addition, all the out-
side trim, railings, and flag pole were re-painted. A new main
rear exit door has been installed.
Every citizen has no doubt noticed that the school budget
for the past few years has been constantly on the increase,
yet the cost of schools from local taxation has not risen so
sharply. This is because the new state aid program has been
designed to help the smaller towns in school costs. What
increases have occurred are due almost in their entirety to
increased costs of goods and services due to the depreciated
purchasing power of the dollar.
L
Since the only budget item in which there has been a
major change is that of tuition, which has already been
discussed, we will not make any detailed comment on the 1954
i budget.
f Although Mashpee is a small town, it is just as vitally
concerned with giving its children a sound education as is the
larger community. I am happy to record that every school
endeavor receives splendid co-operation from the towns-
people, so that if young people make any reasonable effort
i their good schooling is assured.
s
J
Respectfully submitted,
JAMES F. PEEBLES
f
Superintendent of Schools
