■
Charlie reported that, based on.the information submitted to the Board, the plans and Coastal
Engineering's letter, it is his opinion the testing was done in conformance with acceptable
engineering practice and it is his recommendation this can go before the building inspector for
permit application but it-should include all of this information (testing, reports etc.). The safety
factors have been net.
Public Questions:
Lloyd Allen, Southport resident, he was a materials engineer. He suggested chemical'spiking of
the wall, it can turn sand into bedrock; has been used widely in construction of the big dig.
Might be easier than building a new wall.
Charlie said he'd have to look at it, not in a position to recommend it now. Also, the blocks are
available
Paul Johnson, Southport. retired engineer. Questioned long term settlement of the wall.
John Bologna of Coastal engineering discussed this. Base of the wall is excavated 4 t below the
wall, test borings were done to 25 ft. Settlement is not a concern.
Coastal looked at-redi rock calculations and did their own independent evaluation to verify.
The extra toe wall on the bottom will ensure it maintains stability.
Dennis asked if Cons Corn was involved?
Mr. Borvie said the wetlands are more than 50 ft from the wall 0-90 ft). He has spoken with
the Cons Corn argent. They have hired an environmental consultant who is filing an RDA.
Dennis asked if any tree or vegetation must be removed because of the toe wall?
Mr. Bonvie said possibly, may be able to work around there. Mr. Bologna will be on staff for
the endre implementation and completion of this wall. -
The Board received two letters from Linda Fletcher, Southport resident on the safety of the wall
and future liability.
The Board discussed concerns about chain of responsibility since the plans were, tamped''by one
engineer and report was stamped by Mr. Bologna.
Nis. Fletcher's letter asks if a geo grid would be safer with a wall that high.
Mr. Bologna said the wall would have-to be taken apart to install.
Is this design as safe as geo grid?
Mr. Bologna said, with re-enforcement, it has a higher f actor of safety.
Torn asked the safety of adding a 4 ft toe gall vs. keeping 21 ft high wall with geo grid?
Mr. Bologna would prefer a loner, terraced gall.
Ms. Fletcher asked that the wall be built at the manufacturers minimum requirements.
Mr. Bonvie said the manufacturer allows urn re-enforced wall at the height it is now.
Lee said the bottom line is - is this wall safe or isn't it?
Mr. Bonvie said based ons standard engineering practices it is safe.
Lawrence Shubolt, Southport, suggested the building inspector has to make the ultimate decision.
Mould ask the manufacturer to give reassurance that they accept the handling.of their rod uct.
1 p
4
