Beverly Dane, Chairman of the Mashpee Planning <br /> Board. <br /> #1 - Article 2 <br /> The Chairman recognized Fire Chief George Baker who <br /> expressed concern regarding residential and other uses in <br /> connection with larger buildings due to the risks <br /> involved. He is also concerned with suburban buildings <br /> within a rural area being protected by a rural Fire <br /> Department. He stated "'protection is paramount" . <br /> He was hesitant to ask the Board to support this <br /> Article. He explained that pro3ects are reviewed on <br /> case by case basks . His fear being a slow increase of <br /> suburban building and appropriate fire protection. <br /> He cautioned the Board to move slowly in this regard <br /> suggesting more discussion is needed relative the community <br /> needs and Town protection. <br /> He asked about the possibility of submitting an <br /> amendment to Town Meeting requiring the Article to be <br /> contingent.._.upon. _Planning .Board ..and. Fire. -Dep rtment- -review- - <br />__ in order to better address protection issues . He is <br /> concerned with the possibility of the Fire Department <br /> having to fight a fire in a three story building, <br /> explaining the techniques and equipment required to do so <br /> are different . He is not convinced the Article will insure <br /> fire safe construction practices, non-comb stible, steel, <br /> masonry, overall built-in fire protection. <br /> The Town Planner suggested allowing buildings over 5- <br /> feet by Special Permit from the Planning Board, which would <br /> allow the opportunity to deny the project. He was <br /> uncertain as to whether or not the Article could be amended <br /> at this point, noting the separate issue of hotelsmnotels <br /> in the IC District . He mentioned the origin of the Article <br /> being the proposal by the Brain Center, the efficiency of <br /> the site, and elevator access . <br /> The Chairman commented that because all of the land <br /> areas have been developed, construction is beginning to go <br /> upwards. She questioned whether or not the citizens of <br /> iashpee are ready for the type of construction being <br /> proposed for the growth center. She is very concerned <br /> about those safety issues mentioned by the Fire Chief. It <br /> 1 <br />
