,O'WYL of iW.GZS ._..w:.w..._e 2. Plannin Boardw........_
16 Great Neck Road North
JIashpee, .?Massachusetts 02649
Mr. Lehrer stated wastewater is covered in multiple chapters such as Coastal Resources as well as
Water and Wastewater, it bridges multiple chapters. There will be multiple opportunities to discuss this,
along with the Nitrogen Management Plan and Clean Water Plan.
Ms. Waygan asked if Mr. Lehrer could take all the old chapters and map them out to all the new
chapters.
Mr. Lehrer will have an outline for these. He wanted to have more assessments completed, but it is a
heavy lift and he wants to keep the momentum going. There is a lot to carry over and as long as
engagement activities support these findings then it will continue.
Ms. Faulkner plugged in topics from the 1998 LCP and stated Natural Systems drives the region's
economy and she tried to use the language to see if it covered everything. She asked if Coastal
Resources belongs under Natural Systems. She read a quote from Mr. Lehrer that read, "While there is
no doubt people value the smaller charm of Mashpee, Mashpee has lost its rural character and is more
consistent with New England suburbia". However, to her, this is not suburbia as she is used to coming
from Ft. Lauderdale. Mashpee lies somewhere between rural and small town. She inquired if Mashpee
is considered a suburb of Boston.
Mr. Lehrer said contextually speaking, if you think of the suburbs of Boston, the pattern of development
is consistent to the auto centric sprawl pattern we see in Mashpee.
Mr. Fulone asked if they will float some of this to the CCC so they are aware of what is going on.
Mr. Lehrer suggested once drafts are completed they will be submitted for their consideration.
Mr. Hansen referenced a previous goal to retain 50% of open lands and mentioned the housing
shortage. There is a developmental need for more diverse housing. In talking about the lack of
agriculture, there is an effort to take land out of development and make tree farms or agriculture only
farms. There are tax incentives and grants to do so. One hot issue now is buy local. He does not know
of a sustainable local crop that would sell local other than cranberries.
Mr. Lehrer agreed that there is not an agricultural economy here. A question we need to ask is what is
economically viable for the farmer? He had a conversation with the Tribal Chairman and they are
looking at various ways to establish better food sovereignty as this is an important piece of their culture.
He will further pursue agricultural opportunities. As he read the 1998 chapter there was a significant
deviation for goals then and what we see existing today. At the Natural Systems workshop he will get a
better idea of how the community wants to move forward and what is viable for the town. That is a
worthwhile goal if that is something the community would support.
