M
16 Great Neck Road North
-'Alashpee, -Massachusetts 02649
Mr. Hansen stated Tony Andrews Farm can't grow enough on their property with the current boundaries
and they buy veggies to sell at their stand. There is open land all around them that could be developed
into something more productive.
The Chair called from Public Comment and recognized Marjorie Hecht.
Marjorie Hecht- She would like to speak in favor of the rural aspect of Mashpee. It is the rural feel of
the small town, and the opposite of that is urbanization, which she doesn't think people want. She
would argue to keep the rural feel and while they may not be a rural community, she agrees with what
Ms. Faulkner said, if you come from a distinctly suburban area, Mashpee looks rural in comparison.
The discussion resumed back to the Planning Board.
Mr. Lehrer stated his comments are not his feelings of it being one way or the other, it's the positioning
of how things are on the ground. If you were to ask an architect or expert what they see when they
come here, they would agree. He knows everyone values the small town charm of this community, if
you want to call it rural that is fine, he just does not believe it is.
Ms. Waygan would like lists of chapters and what they should be concentrating on first. She reminded
him as he goes through, to identify survey questions, visioning exercises, and discussion pieces for the
vision statement. She also would like Mr. Lehrer to look at current goals and see if they match up to the
CCC. Would anything fall out?
Mr. Lehrer noted it is up to the community participating in the engagements as well as surveys that will
define goals and objectives. Any identified goals in 1998 that are supported through the engagement
sessions will carry through if the community supports them. If it is not supported it should not carry
through. He stated although these are in draft form he can upload the drafts to the website. For anyone
who wishes to read them, he can provide copies, just get in touch with his office.
Existing Conditions
Mr. Lehrer provided the existing conditions chapters that were prepared by Weston & Sampson.
Recreation has a lot of highlighted yellow. He will continue finalizing and begin thinking about future
policies, goals, and actions. He is setting the deadline now for comments and feedback from the Board
to be given to him within the month. He has received comments from Ms. Waygan and is waiting for
more comments from other members. Some tools used were CCC data that is available online, US
Census, American Community Survey, existing plans, reports, and technical analysis. There is a lot of
caveats in the drafts because we don't have all the information. The information needs to be rounded
out via stakeholder interviews. They are the foundation for which we assess the direction moving
forward in consideration with the vision the town defines.
Ms. Waygan reiterated that Mr. Lehrer is looking for Planning Board member comments within the
month.
