MASHPEE COMMUNITY GARDEN ADVISORY COMMITTEE (MCGAC)
MEETING MINUTES
May 18,2022 7:00 P.M.
Popponessett Meeting Room
PRESENT Virginia Scharfenberg, Sheryl Carberry, Frank Gallello,John Carter, Lynn Harris
CALLTO ORDER Chairwoman Scharfenberg called the meeting to order at 7:04 pm.
Meeting Minutes for February 16, 2022 and March 16, 2022—Approved unanimously
COMMUNICATIONS and CORRESPONDENCE—none to report
REPORTS:
• Community Preservation Act funding approval for expanded community garden:Virginia
Scharfenberg reported that Article 15 was passed at the May 2, 2022 Town Meeting and
monies will be available for use in June.
• Virginia Scharfenberg reported that Steve Fernandes, HDNA construction contractor should
be available sometime in June to build the garden beds, pathways etc., after which the fence
contractor will do his work. The anticipated June 41h start will need to be pushed back.
• The Board reviewed current gardeners chart and added a few names from 2020 and 2021
chronological Wait Lists to fill vacant plots. It also itemized who the 14 new gardeners would
be, utilizing chronological Wait List names, and determined who would end up being on this
season's Wait List. Sheryl Carberry volunteered to create the relevant garden plot charts and
the Board agreed to call newly assigned gardeners for existing plots#9, 10, 14 and 20.
• Virginia Scharfenberg reported that the 3 existing Compost Bins will be removed; she noted
that the Cape Cod community gardens she had called to check on whether they did
composting do not allow composting on site. Their decisions were based on reasoning similar
to ours.
• Virginia Scharfenberg reported on her meeting with Catherine Laurent, DPW Director and two
of her staff on site. DPW will remove the grass in the 20'W x 66' deep garden expansion area
prior to HDNA construction. Decision was made to utilize area behind current compost bins as
a 'disposal' site for garden debris over the course of the season. It will be partially surrounded
by 3'tall fence border; DPW will also install a concrete slab so that their skid steer can gather
the debris readily each fall for deposit at the Transfer Station.
OLD BUSINESS:
• Status of Mobile Farmers Market in Mashpee and Barnstable County—Virginia visited a
market at Knaukabout Brewery that is available for consumers on Saturdays. It is not an
official Mobile Market.
NEW BUSINESS:
• "Welcome Back to the Garden" will be a June event
1
