instruction, provide independent work time, and small
<br />group instruction. Small group instruction allows for
<br />differentiated instruction and supporting student
<br />achievement of the Massachusetts Learning Standards.
<br />Science instruction is aligned with the state frameworks
<br />that incorporate the Next Generation Science
<br />Standards. Teachers design engaging hands-on lessons
<br />from erosion, plate tectonics, marine life, forms of
<br />energy, and the solar system for example. Quashnet
<br />School students learn to be stewards of the environment
<br />through a series of field trips focused on the
<br />conservation and the unique ecosystems of Cape Cod.
<br />Grade 5 students participate in Project Wet which
<br />allows students to learn about water conservation and
<br />Cape Cod's single source aquifer; in conjunction with
<br />Cape Light Compact and Mashpee High School
<br />students, Quashnet students participate in an Energy
<br />Carnival consisting of approximately 25 energy -related
<br />activities. Learning about the uniqueness of Mashpee,
<br />the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, the United States
<br />and North America, the Age of Exploration, Native
<br />American Studies, American Revolution, and learning
<br />and applying the Five Themes of Geography are the
<br />major topics of study in social studies across the grades.
<br />All Quashnet students participated in the
<br />computer -based Next Generation MCAS in
<br />Reading/ELA and Mathematics. Grade 5 students are
<br />administered the Science Technology/Engineering
<br />MCAS which is a paper and pencil assessment. The
<br />results of these standardized tests help us evaluate our
<br />curricula against state standards, instructional
<br />strategies, pacing, and in meeting individual student
<br />needs. Each year, the Department of Elementary and
<br />Secondary Education releases a Report Card sharing

<br />Students at the Quashnet School enjoy one of six
<br />special subject classes daily. Within a six -day cycle,
<br />students visit an art class, receive STEM (Science,
<br />Technology, Engineering, and Math) Education,
<br />participate in Physical Education, Library Skills and
<br />Digital Citizenship, Enrichment (Grades 3-4), World
<br />Languages (Grade 5-6), and General Music class.
<br />Students in Grades 4-6 may also elect to participate in
<br />Band, Chorus or Strings in lieu of General Music.
<br />During the 2018-2019 school year, an average of 175
<br />students in Grade 4-6 participated in band and strings
<br />with another 60 students in the school chorus.
<br />In addition to a robust instructional program,
<br />after -school special interest classes are offered to all
<br />students free of charge. The classes are taught by staff
<br />members and meet over a 16-week period. There are
<br />two sessions offered each year. Courses for the 2018-
<br />2019 school year included instruction in origami,
<br />pottery, yoga, reading support, board games, computer
<br />club, coding, Minecraft.edu, knitting/crocheting club,
<br />and creative writing for example. Selected after -school
<br />activities require year-round participation and include
<br />the National Elementary Honor Society, Student
<br />Council, and K-Kids (a division of the Kiwanis Club).
<br />Physical fitness is encouraged for all students.
<br />Fifth and sixth -grade students are able to participate in
<br />a fall, winter, and spring intramural sports program that
<br />includes flag football, indoor soccer, and track led by
<br />the physical education teacher. Sixth -grade students
<br />participate in before school floor hockey on Fridays,
<br />which is always a favorite for our students. All age
<br />groups are encouraged to participate in a Unified
<br />Sports/Special Olympics program that meets
<br />throughout the year. The Mashpee Unified Team
<br />competes locally with Barnstable and other local towns
<br />as well as in the Cape Cod Game Day - Special
<br />Olympics.
<br />Traditions are well established and part of the
<br />culture of Quashnet School. Each fall we honor our
<br />American Veterans in a very moving Veterans Day
<br />assembly. The Quashnet School community welcomes
<br />local veterans who have served around the world
<br />defending our freedom and the rights of people
<br />everywhere. In conjunction with honoring our
<br />veterans, the Quashnet K-Kids collect Halloween
<br />candy from students to send to loved ones who are
<br />deployed. The 2018-2019 school year was the 17th
<br />year of Quashnet Care packages being sent to our
<br />soldiers. Other traditions at Quashnet School include
<br />the gingerbread village display where families share
<br />their sugary creations during the month of December.
<br />Every April the Quashnet gym comes alive with the
<br />Students vs Staff floor hockey game. Following April
<br />vacation, students may choose to participate in the
<br />Quashnet School Spelling Bee. In May, the community
<br />comes together to share their professions with our
<br />students in our annual Career Day. Quashnet School
<br />students are exposed to a multitude of professions from
<br />the medical field, police, the military, banking,
<br />cooking, to government. Not only are they exposed to
<br />a variety of potential careers, but they also learn how
<br />education is critical in achieving a career path. In June,
