although all staff and students were returning to school
r;
on a full-time basis this school year,we still needed to
follow restrictions due to the global pandemic, Covid
19. The school community would return to classes
fully masked with the exception of lunch. Students
would need to maintain a three-foot distance from one
another to begin the year. In the lunchroom, students0
continued to sit in one direction but could be three to a 1 j
bench and not just two. Yes,there was some progress,
but not quite what we hoped! Being a resilient team
the staff and students forged ahead.
It was a great honor in October 2021 to be the first
of the Mashpee schools to proudly display three new
flags in our courtyard. When the Quashnet School was
built in the 1970s,only one flag pole was installed. With
the help of DPW, the front courtyard was redesigned l
and three new flagpoles now greet all visitors to our '
school. For the first time, along with the Stars and
Stripes, we added the Massachusetts flag and raised
the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe's flag. We welcomed
community members, Mashpee Wampanoag Tribal
members,and town officials,for this pride-filled event. 1r
r
Long may they wave.
t, l
lu OI6
Providing student leadership opportunities and
---».— ..--_-. ....----........ encouraging student voices is a goal at Quashnet
School. Grade 6 students elect their student council
Adaptability is a skill that we all had to embrace representatives and this team of young leaders organize
with the pandemic, and in February 2022 we were special events and are leaders of special projects. Some
ready for a big change. The mask mandate was lifted of the highlights include their design of the parade float
for schools in Massachusetts! We enjoyed seeing which was recognized as the Best Children's Float
smiles, and meeting one another for the first time, all for the 2021 Mashpee Christmas Parade. The student
over again! Students, once again, could share school council representatives share the daily announcements,
supplies, books, and would be able to face each other having a voice in the school. They assisted the K.C.
at a lunch table. Teachers and staff quickly pivoted to Coombs School and Quashnet School field day events,
help students and each other adjust to these changes and and they started the Trex recycling program for our
learn how to share. With the lifting of the restrictions, school and community for example.
field trips were also coming back. Below is a photo The dedication of the Quashnet School teachers
of two third-graders excited to learn about Mashpee's and staff is remarkable. They believe in students and
history at the One Room School House.Other field trips recognize the importance of building relationships
included the Plimoth Patuxet Museum in Plymouth, and knowing their students personally as well as their
Cape Cod Canal Museum,Boston Museum of Science, academic strengths and needs. These connections are
Waquoit Bay Estuary, and Barnstable Court House. most evident as the year comes to a close and students
and teachers are leaving for the summer.Tears and hugs
are genuine. Each year, we also say goodbye to our
Quashnet "family" members as they retire. This year
we bid a fond farewell to school counselor, Mr. Sean
168
