of, A,
16 Great .Neck Road North
Mashpee, MA 0264
Telephone - (SCS) 539-1 38
MASHPEE HISTORICAL COMISSION
Minutes of Meeting— October 12, 2023
Mashpee Historical Commission Meeting was called to order by Ava Costello at
4:09 pm.
Commissioners Present: Ava Costello, Richard DeSorgher, and Nancy Soderberg;
Rosemary Burns Love and Joan Tavares-Avant telephoned in. Brian Hyde was not
present. Lenny Pocknett came to the meeting and was interviewed for the opening on
our Commission. Each Commissioner will fill out and send in to the Select Board, their
Preliminary Evaluation Form. Lenny will have to go before the Select Board at their
next meeting to be approved.
Rosemary reported on her meeting with Ashley Fisher from Natural Resources, and
Christian and Allison who came from the University of Massachusetts. Rosemary
mentioned that we have so much information at the Archives available, the old Town
Reports, etc., and she advised her to come in to look at it.
Richard reported that the Garden Club will purchase the daffodil bulbs, and will be
reimbursed after submitting the bill for the expense. He estimated the cost to be $100.
Richard is working with both Senator Moran and Representative Viera, and the state
DPW Director, to get approval for placement of the new Mashpee River sign on Route
28 because it is a State road.
Richard is working with a Veterans' group from Southport to honor Mashpee veterans
with photo banners on the light poles around the park. Greg Quilty, Veterans Service
Officer, will come to some of the meetings on this too. Rosemary suggested that
Richard get in touch will Bill Blaisdell from New Seabury. Richard is hopeful that they
can be put on display for an extended period of time, perhaps from July 4t" through
Veterans Day. Some of the funding will come from the various veterans groups to get
this project started. It may be possible to get some of the costs on this project covered
by donated free printing services.
Richard and Ava felt that the Historical Preservation Awards Ceremony went very well.
The event was well attended by not only the recipients, their families and friends, but
also by Town officials, Hope Hanscom, Mashpee Assistant Superintendent of Mashpee
Schools; John Cotton, Michaela Wyman-Columbo from the Select Board; and the
Building Inspector, Dave Morris, also came. One of the students spoke eloquently of
how meaningful the Restoration of the Woodshed Project had been to him.
