. ,M . " .tI' ltt
" e rl mp ' Cot irniss-io
a 16 Great Neck Road North
Mashpee, M. 02649
r f Telephone - (508) 539-1 438
MASHPEE HISTORICAL COMISSION
Minutes of Meeting—May 30, 2024
Mashpee Historical Commission meeting was called to order by Ava Costello at
4:15 pm.
Commissioners Present: Ava Costello and Richard DeSorgher, Brian Hyde, Lenny
Pocknett, and Nancy Soderberg. Rosemary Burns Love and Joan Tavares-Avant
telephoned in.
Brian Hyde: CPC has new updates for the fall Town Meeting. Historic District
Commission: Both Richard and Ava will go over to Town Hall again to be sworn in as
new members of the Commission. Brian told us that Evan Lehrer is leaving his job as
Town Planner for the Town to open his own 'business. He will be missed, but we wish
him well.
Richard informed us that the schoolhouse tours for this spring have been completed
with six classes of 3rd grade students from the Quashnet School having come for the
tours. Richard and Ava also conducted tours of the schoolhouse, Veterans Garden and
War Memorials, and the Archives for the Mashpee Men's Club.
Richard reported on the cleaning of the cemetery stones by Naomi Walker which has
been well done. Joan made a motion that we keep Naomi Walker working on the
project, and Ava seconded it; we voted the motion unanimously. Naomi has already
looked at the Attaquin Cemetery gravestones, and we approved that she proceed.
Richard brought up trying to identify the name/burial with the crumbled stone in the
cemetery. Ava suggested that they bring up a list to the cemetery and go through the
names of the known burials. Lenny suggested that we may have to make it as
unknown. Research will continue.
Rosemary: She has been working on research for Chopchaque Road.
Ava spoke about the issues involved with burials in the contiguous areas of the Amos-
Coombs-Avant cemeteries. Catherine is working on the surveying the areas previous to
the new fencing that is proposed.
Ava had a meeting with the Community Park people which consisted of Rodney,
Wayne, Carol Sherman, and Richard. The Town Manager has requested that Ava have
the metal signs that he wants to display at the Town Hall be prepared first.
