Rosemary Burns Love and Joan Tavares-Avant
telephoned in.
We began by approving outstanding MHC Meeting Minutes. The Minutes were
approved for March 28t"-Brian Hyde Abstained;for May 2"d-Brian Hyde Abstained; and
were approved for May 30th—with one correction.
Richard informed us that he had met with Catherine Laurent and VHB about the new.
monument to recognize all post-Vietnam war veterans. He feels it is very important that
veterans of that era be involved in deciding the design of this new monument. VHB has
suggested some interesting designs that would tie in with our other monuments. He is
exploring costs to present to CPC by next spring.
Richard is meeting with David Weeden about the naming and fencing of the Avant-
Amos-Coombs Cemetery. The Avant plot is on tribal land, but we would like to include
it in this cemetery. Richard proposed a motion that we draft a letter to the Tribal Council
asking that both cemetery plots be fenced and included as one Ancient Cemetery,
seconded by Joan, and it was voted unanimously.
Ayesha Shafi, a summer intern from MMHS, is researching the names of all 15
Wampanoag veterans who died in the Revolutionary War. Her research, along with
research of other honor students working with their teacher, Mr. Brody, will be used to
publish a booklet on these soldiers during Mashpee's commemoration of the 250tn
Anniversary of the American Revolutionary War. Richard will send Rosemary a list of
the names of these soldiers.
He mentioned that Pedro Carrasquillo, a volunteer docent conducting tours of the
schoolhouse, is working on a one-room schoolhouse flyer. It will be distributed around
town so visitors and shoppers could have information about when tours are available.
Richard reported that the cemetery stones which were cleaned by Naomi Walker look
so much better. He also suggested that we visit the cemeteries to see the stones and
other work that has been done by the DPW, which has very much improved these
ancient cemeteries. Lenny remarked that the Attaquin Cemetery across from his house
really looks beautiful after all this work has been done.
