MINUTES October 8, 1998 4 BOARD OF HEALTH
*FOR DISCUSSION*****
John's Pond Test Results
Mr. McQuaid relayed, "A couple of weeks ago I was called by the newspaper
asking whether I knew about a hit of contamination inside John's Pond." "I was not
aware of it however, today I was called by Lee Perry from the I.R.P. office at the Military
Reservation who confirmed there was a hit of T.C.E. inside, underneath John's Pond_" "I
don't have the whole package however, it will be delivered to me tomorrow." "As part of
the I.R.P. program to delineate the confines of the SD5 plume they set out a number of
monitoring wells under John's Pond at intervals of 25' across the pond and 150' down."
'Every 125' they have these sets of monitoring wells that go down beyond the bottom of
the pond." "They came up with an unusually high hit of T.C.E.." "The drinking water
standards are 5 p.p.b.." "At 50' below the bottom of the pond in the groundwater they
came up with hits in excess of 1100 p.p.b.... "This is a 100' off shore of the boat ramp in
John's Pond and 50' south." "It's a very concentrated small area of between 30' and 60'
square feet." "I asked them if they tested the actual pond water and they said yes, they
put a probe in down to the bottom of the pond and lifted it up 2 inches and took samples
there." "The samples there had a detect of 40 to 50 p.p.b. of T.C.E.." "They then put out
more probes all around this hot spot and if you go 75' north, south, east and west it's non-
detect so it's coming up right in this one area." `They are questioning whether it is part of
the SD5 plume because the SD5 has T.C.E. but it also has other compounds and these hits
came up with pure T.C.E. in extremely high levels." "They have mapped the plume."
"They're now going to determine whether this hit is a product of the SD5 plume or
whether it's something totally unrelated to that." "In my opinion, without having read the
full report, that there was a slug of T.C.E. that came through the SD5 plume." "I am
recommending the Board request the military come in and explain jointly to the Board of
Health and Board of Selectmen."
Board members agreed.
I
Mr. Cram directed the agent to invite the Selectmen and the military to the next
regularly scheduled meeting.
Southport
R.. Mr. McQuaid relayed, "I was asked by the Executive Secretary to attend a meeting
with the Fire Department and Building Department to discuss occupancy permits." "Mr.
Bonvie is expecting occupancy permits to be issued." "We agreed to sign-off on renewal
i
I
