Mason, Town Manager <br /> FROM: Greg Taylor, Director, DPVVc( ( <br /> DATE: January 5, 2007 <br /> SUBJECT: South Cape Beach Update <br /> Since the emergency repairs provided by replacing sand adjacent to and beneath the pavement at <br /> South Cape Beach In November, the following action has been taken: <br /> Steven Solbo has advised us that only sand can be used between the paved parking lot and the mean <br /> high tide line. The beach is at risk because it is in a velocity zone and it has been included in the <br /> Massachusetts Department of Protection (DEP) as: <br /> • Area of Critical Environmental Concern (ACEC) <br /> • Priority and Significant endangered species habitat area <br /> The "Beach Nourishment" permit is limited to between the dates of October 15th and April 151h. <br /> Note that we are not allowed to provide.beach nourishment during prime hurricane season (August <br /> and September). <br /> Action Items: <br /> We recently, (December 28, 2006), received Conservation Commission approval to extend our Beach <br /> Nourishment Permit. The Permit has been in place since February 13, 1998 and is now extended <br /> until February 13, 2010. <br /> We have requested a proposal to engineer and permit an improved protection system for the paved <br /> r s parking surface. .A combination of GEO-Tubes and GEO-Males may be used. The program is <br /> replacing the sand-beneath the pavement along the beach with these more durable elements (a <br /> Ndfi concrete retaining wall is not allowed). <br /> °1 <br /> cc: Steven Solbo, Conservation Agent <br /> Catherine Laurent, Assistant DPW Director <br />
