8
Board of Selectmen
Minutes
October 21, 2002.
APPOINTMENTS AND HEARINGS:
Cape Cod Commercial Hook Fisherman's Association, Inc.
Melissa Weidman, Communications Director of the Cape Cod
Commercial Hook Fisherman's Association was present to request the
Selectmen's support in implementing a Sector Allocation Plan to allow the
hook and line fishing fleet to be given a percentage of the total allowable
catch on Georges Bank.
Hook and line fishing is commercial fishing that uses lines placed in the
water with as many as 3,600 hooks to pull the fish up individually.
Federal regulators are considering dropping cod trip limits from 2,000 to
500 lbs. If this were to happen, the book and line fishing fleet would be
forced out of business.
The non-profit association is comprised on 1300 members and is based out
of Chatham. The organization is committed to promoting a healthy
marine environment and maintaining the traditionat small boat fishing
fleet on the Cape.
Ms. Weidman indicated.that she would forward additional information to
the Selectmen for additional review and consideration. The Board agreed
to place the matter on an upcoming Selectmen's agenda.
