V j•, b.L'
.10z, .. P. O_ BOX 1108
ABL£CD" MASHPEE. MA 02649
FINANCE COMMITTEE MINUTES
February 25, 1991
Mashpee Town Hall
Present: Carole Dunivan, John Ferriday, Tony Gallo, Deirdre Greelish,
Carl Heller, Vern olka and Jim Vaccaro
The Finance Committee meeting was called to order at 6:30 p.m. The
Chairman recommended that approval of the minutes of February 20th be
deferred until the members had a chance to .review them.
Jim. distributed the latest spread sheet noting that he had found
two errors. The Treasurer Tax Collector had inadvertently listed the debt
service figure ($5 , 2 5 0) twice and the $90,000 in Pension Reserve had been
previously added into the Retirement Assessment. He further noted that
revenues had decreased by $11,000 as the Selectmen will not raise the beach
fees.
Jim checked on the eligibility for medical insurance for the elected
board officials. He informed the members that State law states that if an
j elected official is compensated he is entitled to get the same rate as the
town employee does on insurance. The Finance Committee had previously
recommended that all elected board officials be non-salaried. Vern informed
the members that she felt these elected board officials should be compensated
and she motioned the Committee to reconsider their previous decision. This
motion was seconded by Tony. The motion to reconsider elected board officials
salaries was carried with 5 in favor and 2 opposing votes by Carole and Deirdre.
Tony agreed that the boards should be compensated and stated that he
would like to address each board separately. He further noted that he felt
that the Selectmen should receive a higher salary than the Board of Health
and the.- Assessors. Currently the boards are compensated as follows:
Selectmen (5) $2,500 each
Board of Health (3) $1,500 each
Assessors (3) $1,500 each
Tony motioned that the salary for the Selectmen be set at $1,500 each.
There was no second to this motion.
Tony motioned that the salary for the Selectmen be set at $1,000 each.
John Ferriday seconded the motion. Vern felt this was too high and Carl expressed
his belief that all three boards should be compensated equally. The motion for
the $1,000 salary for Selectmen did not carry with only 3 votes in favor by
Tony, John and Jim and 4 votes opposed.
