Page 2
finalized with FinComm and as changes are made.
Dan Goggin mentioned that Falmouth High School's tuition costs bill
was $1,250 ,379 saving $207,083 from the original budgeted amount of
$1 ,457,462. Possibly more students going to other schools than
projected. Deirdre asked what should be done with Falmouth's
tuition next year? Can this excess be transferred for something
else? John asked what the projection is for Falmouth High School
for FY94? Mr. Dunivan stated that 342 is the number Mr. Fudala
gave for the amount of eighth grade students entering high school .
Dan stated that this number includes Cape Cod Tech also. Dan
suggested taking 300 students x $4,809.15 = $1,442 ,745 + 3%
$1 ,486,027. The committee agreed to wait until more information is
received from Dr. DeMoura as to what to expect in FY94 and what is
currently happening in FY93 .
SCHOOL BUDGET
John Ferriday issued to members a copy of how much state and
federal aid is disbursed to the school department and what it is
used for. Approximately $546,019 was given to the school in grants
for FY93 . Mr. Ferriday also gave to members a copy of a letter
written to FinComm from Dr. DeMoura regarding the explanation of
school districts. Members questioned the projected number of
students entering kindergarten. Mr. Ferriday explained that the
number that Dr. DeMoura gave of 180 is a projection because in 1989
there were 155 births. Why is there a 20% increase over Tom
Fudala's number? John was not sure why, just that 180 was the
number Dr. DeMoura was projecting. According to Mr. Ferriday Dr.
DeMoura did not give an explanation why he did not use the town
planner's numbers. Mr. Ferriday also mentioned that he spoke to
Dr. DeMoura about year round education. Mr. Ferriday feels very
positive about year round education and feels that it needs to be
pursued. He felt that the committee formed of Maryanne Gibbs and
Dr. Petti should also include senior citizens and chamber of
commerce members or it will not even get going. He felt that it
cannot be formalized. He also felt that the saving of money due to
year round education needs to be of second importance. You might
save money or you might not. What you are looking to accomplish is
better education of Mashpee's children. Deirdre agreed that we do
not need to focus on money but focus on the educational value.
Ms. Greelish stated that the school department is not being run on
5. 3 million, but on 5.8 million with this grant money. Ed Baker
suggested to John that he get a copy of the school's end of year
report that is sent to the state (where the money comes from and
exactly where it is spent) . John stated that he would get copies
for the last two years and put them in the FinComm mailbox.
Members discussed Page 3 of the school budget (Budget Guidelines) .
Mr. Ferriday felt that these items were only assumptions and if the
school is not given any more money, then they would need to fit the
new students into the old classrooms and just increase the number
