1
Board of Selectmen
Minutes—Verbatim
September 11, 2000
Facilitator Discussion:
Selectman Leveille: A brief discussion followed with respect to the five names that
were submitted as potential facilitators. Kopelman and Paige will
be requested to update the Board. (Start) We are not having an
awful lot of success as some of the potential candidates don't like
to put resumes out for some reason so it might come down to really
an interview process with this folks, so that is kind of where we
stand on our portion at this point.
We also received correspondence from the Mashpee Wampanoag
Indian Tribal Council, two letters indicating that they had, which
I'm sure you've read about in the newspaper, an August 21" letter
and an August 31 letter received on August 31 sc indicating that
they have identified some potential facilitators, James Vaccaro,
Patrick Field and two gentlemen from End Dispute of Boston,
Mass., they are Eric Vanleeuwen, and Samuel Hoar. So we have
that correspondence.
We also have correspondence from the Tribal Council forwarding
the results from the survey that was conducted that they
commissioned and their topic of conversation recommends that
a request from the Selectmen to provide a resolution for an
uncommitted,... I will read it so you will know,
The Tribal Council formally requests the Board of Selectmen to
immediately pass a resolution for the federal recognition of the
Tribe and it formally commits the Town to participate now in the
facilitator negotiation process we have been discussing. Please let
me know as quickly as you can whether you and the other
Selectmen will move and adopt such a resolution, etc. It's signed
Glenn Marshall, President of the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribal
Council.
So that is where we have been in discussions with this Tribal
recognition issue.
Betty Nichols: Ms. Nichols said she believed that as a Selectman, Chuckie should
not be sitting on this issue... She asked of a potential conflict of
interest with Selectman Green.
Selectman Green was asked to address the question.
