3
John Ferguson: Good faith? Now they are asking for a facilitator. What will the
facilitator do? We have no Tribe in the Town of Mashpee at the
present time. The Bureau of Indian Affairs has not made their
decision on this and that's who should be making the decision.
I have nothing against the Selectmen in the Town. They have done
a great job for this Town, but I think a lot of their time has been
taken up with this particular discussion, and I think they need to
take a lot more of their time on the Town of Mashpee and let the
Bureau of Indian Affairs because the Tribal Council has said that
the Bureau of Indian Affairs is going to make a decision on this.
Let the Bureau of Indian Affairs make that decision.
Applause.
That relieves the Board of Selectmen from having to sit down with
the Tribal Council and facilitate a piece of paper that if they were
to get tribal recognition, it would be worthless. Because if they
were to get tribal recognition, their particular constitution would
come before the Constitution of the United States of America and
anything they did with their lands, we would have no control over.
So let the Bureau of Indian Affairs make the decision. You as
Selectmen don't have to be put on the hot seat. And that's the way
I feel.
Applause.
Selectman Leveille: Mr. Marshall, may I ask you a question, maybe two questions. If
you'd like to come up to the microphone. I don't mean to put you
on the hot seat, but this is...
I guess, my question is Mr. Ferguson stated that the Tribal Council
has indicated that they believe recognition from the BIA is
eminent, and I believe I have heard those comments too. Do you
think that is accurate?
