2
Board of Selectmen
Minutes
September 25, 2000
APPOINTMENTS AND HEARINGS:
School Committee: (continued)
With the new appeal, additional representation is necessary from the three
Cape Communities participating in the suit. In addition to Mashpee,
Barnstable and Sandwich are to be included in the appeal. The plaintiffs
are to be students because the educational equity issue directly effects
them. Each of the three Cape towns will be requested to contribute an
additional $5,000 towards the suit.
It was noted that the Town of Barnstable has voted to commit $5,000
towards the suit. The officials from RAGE have not gone before the
Town of Sandwich at this time.
The School Committee related concern with respect to utilizing the name
of a student in the case. It was noted that.their parent lists the name of the
student. An affidavit is not requested from the student. The RAGE
organization acts on behalf of the student. In the past appeal, a plaintiff
was a student of the Mashpee school system. Representative Cafxyn
indicated that she is aware of a Mashpee student and parent who would
volunteer to serve as a plaintiff for the new appeal.
Additional information is needed to reflect upon the specific programs that
were cut and eliminated prior to the passing of the educational reform, and
how much was needed to fund and revive the programs. The continued
review of the equity issue in comparison with comparable towns was also
considered.
Discussion followed. Funding initiatives were also reviewed.
*Motion made by Mrs. Lynch to support the efforts of the RAGE
organization in their lawsuit, and further consider the contribution of
$5,000 at a later date.
*Motion seconded by Mrs. Lopez.
VOTE: Unanimous. 4-0.
I
