5
Board of Selectmen
Minutes
September 25, 2000
APPOINTMENTS AND HEARINGS:
Public Hearing— Scallop Regulations:
Selectman Leveille opened the Public Hearing on the Mashpee Shellfish
Regulations, Section III, 3. Scallop Regulations. The following changes
regarding commercial scalloping in Waquoit Bay are proposed. Scallop
season is from October I through the following March 31 for commercial
and noncommercial scalloping. Commercial scalloping is not allowed in
Waquoit Bay from October 1 through October 15. Commercial scalloping
is allowed in Waquoit Bay from October 16 through the following March
31. The commercial catch limit is 5 bushels per day in Waquoit Bay, and
10 bushels per day in other areas open for commercial shellfishing. A
commercial permit holder also holding a noncommercial(family)permit
can take scallops noncommercially (one bushel per week) on Sundays
only in October and November (in Waquoit Bay, and other open area), but
not from December through the following March when commercial
shellfishing is allowed 7 days per week (in Mashpee).
Mr. York, the Shellfish Constable discussed the proposed scallop
regulations and noted that the scallops in Waquoit Bay are due to the
result of a cooperative seeding effort by the Towns of Mashpee and
Falmouth. It was also noted that the Town of Falmouth approved
regulations restricting scalloping in Waquoit Bay to non-commercial only
from October 1 through October 15. Waquoit Bay is a good place for
family scalloping, and there are more scallops in Nantucket Sound that can
be taken commercially.
Being no comment, the Board motioned to close the Public Hearing.
Motion made by Selectman Cahalane to close the Public Hearing.
Motion seconded by Selectman Marsters.
VOTE: Unanimous. 5-0.
Motion made by Selectman Cahalane to adopt the Scallop Regulations
as recommended by the Shellfish Constable.
Motion seconded by Selectman Marsters.
VOTE: Unanimous. 5-0.
