if
Board of Selectmen
Minutes—Verbatim
October 10, 2000
Selectman Marsters: we will tell you we are going to our attorneys. If we get the
answer, we will tell you what the answer is, and only seek to have
a level playing field, if the Tribal Council will agree to fully
disclose all of their actions and their intentions also. Well, where
do we stand? We stand right now, as David said, we took a vote, it
was sort of a last minute thing, and I share David's opinion that I
really don't know what we did, but we seriously tied our hands I
think. We ought to be down in Washington with a lobbyist finding
out what is going on with this new bill.
Applause.
Selectman Marsters: I'm sure that the town has the right to participate. It is a fair
process. And I hope that the Tribal Council would raise that idea
and say, yes, you have every right to know, and we support you in
that. It might be able to save us a few dollars with our legal rights
if we can get the petition and the map in our hands right away
without going through legal ways of getting it. I think that it is
imperative that we come out and put an end to this, the rumors, the
innuendoes, it has been a year now, we've gone no place, we have
received no information. We need information to make the proper
decisions, and these are the words that I am going to say over and
over again. We need full disclosure and I am willing to commit to
that,to play that game of full disclosure and I hope the Tribal
Council will commit to that also.
I think we need to develop a game plan. We have sort of been
game plan-less now for about four or five months. We started out,
we did go to Hale and Dorr, we talked to our attorneys and we
came back and we said okay, lets sit down, and lets talk with the
Tribal Council. That didn't work out. Now we are back to, okay,
we are not going to talk to the Tribal Council, but we are going to
sit down on our hands and do nothing. That is basically the
approach we are taking right now. We can't sit on our hands and
do nothing. We need to be down there, finding out what is going
on in the BIA, and we also need to request that everybody
involved in here play the game of full disclosure.
So I would recommend that we develop a game plan tonight to see
how we are going to handle the situation, and we have to do this
3
I
