Board of Selectmen
Minutes—Verbatim
October 10, 2000
Selectman Marsters: soon. If you read through this paper here, it says the House
Resource, the Bill is to be marked up soon. The word soon is used.
It also says that we need to have more balanced legislation here. I
think that the whole thing seems to be being hurried, and if this
process is being hurried, and we are behind the eight-ball now, we
have been since May, we'd better get down there right away and
find out what is going on. And, I don't see how anybody could
have a problem with us just simply asking the questions, What is
it? What is it you want? It's simple. Full disclosure. So I think
we ought to devise a game plan this evening to get that full
disclosure out and immediately get a lobbyist down in Washington
to find out what is going on, and I support Jan Strickland's
proposal of getting the BIA, maybe Kevin...the head of BIA, the
Tribal Council, the Selectmen, in public hearing forum to answer
any questions that the public may have concerning this matter.
Applause.
Selectman Green: Mr. Chairman, I would like to correct one thing that Mr. Marsters'
has said. That was discussed with the Chairman, that was
discussed with Mr. Whritenour and has been discussed with Mr.
Taylor, once we get into the BIA process, we have no votes. I
myself have no vote. As a Selectman, I know that our attorneys,
Hale and Dorr know about House Bill 611. John McCain helped
push 611 on the floor in June. If we took the time and we went
with our attorneys, and they did not inform us about House Bill
611,then we have a problem with that. I'd say right along, that we
need to sit down and talk this out. We need to get beside from the
table, we need an open discussion, we need everything disclosed. I
also agree with the gentleman, to bring the BIA up here and
eliminate all of the misknowns. They need to tell them the rules
and regulations, how it is going to go and what it is all about.
4
