Board of Selectmen
Minutes—Verbatim
October 10, 2000
Selectman Marsters: It doesn't allow us to participate in the process...And you boys can
participate, I respect you for that, you have already said that. And
I think we should let our people, our congressmen, our
representatives, our senators know that we are not in favor of this
bill. And, it wouldn't be bad just to send somebody down there
just to keep an eye on it to see what is going on. And shame on
Hale and Dorr, yes, I did not get this information from Hale and
Darr, this came from a source that was in Connecticut so I just
want to make that clear.
Selectman Cahalane: ....It seems that we should use the same lawyer that the five towns
in Connecticut are using, Perkins and Cole.
Selectman Leveille: ...I just want to make a few things clear...First of all,...you said a
lobbyist wouldn't have a job to do. That's not really true, a
lobbyist would be our voice. That's what a lobbyist does. He is
our voice because he has access to people and to areas to which we
do not have access...I also support Ken, in the fact we should go
ahead with a lobbyist on these two bills, I also think we should in
good faith, send a letter to the Tribal Council asking them for a
documented copy of the petition filed to the BIA,the entire
document for full disclosure purposes as Ken was talking about.
...If they are not forthcoming with the actual document and map
and so forth, then I think we should go to our attorneys... and ask
them to use all of their legal means to go to the BIA under the
Freedom of Information Act to get whatever information we need.
Selectman Cahalan: ...When Wayne and I met with Glenn Marshall, at the table, Glenn
Marshall said that he did not care what lawyer we used...as long as
it was not Hale and Dorr...I think that we should employ the
Washington law firm of Perkins and Cole that is representing the
Connecticut towns...They seem to know what they are doing, Hale
and Dorr has not had an Indian suit since our Indian suit. They are
expensive, they are probably even more expensive than Hale and
Dorr—but I'd like to go in with a fresh outlook with someone that
really knows what is going on, right now, especially... with this.
Selectman Leveille: We would probably have to continue retain Hale and Dorr from a
historical perspective.
6
