Mr. Griffiths mentioned
Wareham High School which paid $200 per square foot. He also had
visited Rockford High School in Michigan which had paid $180 per
square foot. He explained that his Committee, because of Mashpee's
community, should try to hold at $145 per square foot. The State
also requires $145 and that includes everything except the land.
The State doesn't give any reimbursement for the land.
Mr. Griffiths also discussed the size of the school . The school
will hold $1 , 350 students but the classroom space will be prepared
for only $1,000 students. He felt that if the town elected to vote
to build the school to equip 1, 350 students, it would cost $32
million. If the town votes to equip the school for 1,000 students
it will cost the town $27.7 million without the land, using the
State formula. Mr. Griffiths stated that his Committee hired an
education consultant who will work for them, and that they have an
RFP for a project manager to monitor the schedule. The building
will be designed to meet the budget and not to exceed. Mr. Goggin
questioned as to why the school classrooms would be prepared and
equipped only to house 1,000 students instead of the 1 , 350
projected? Mr. DiNizio answered that for the next ten years, the
town is only projecting that classrooms will be needed for 1, 000.
Mr. Ferriday asked whether the Building Committee is involved in
the actual design? Mr. Ferriday explained that he believed the
library in the school should be accessible, even if the school is
closed. For instance in the summer, evening, or weekends it would
be nice to have the library available to the students, as well as
the rest of the public. He felt that CLAMS should be available in
the school library, just as is in the Mashpee Public Library. He
also felt that the gymnasium should be available and have its own
access. Mr. Griffiths answered that the Committee will be involved
as much as they can be from a Committee standpoint.
Mr. Griffiths explained that the Education Consultant, John
Collabro, will be working for the Committee to provide and plan a
definite educational outline, the curriculum Mashpee will teach.
Mr. Dinizio stated that there are volunteers who make up the
Curriculum Committee and they have provided a Mission Statement.
Mr. Goggin asked who will pull in the Cummunity's ideas? Mr.
Griffiths stated that the Superintendent and also the Leisure
Services have been asked for their input.
Ms. Greelish explained that she would feel .a lot better building
the school without the clock ticking. She would feel better if
after town meeting, the town went again to Falmouth and asked for
an extension. Mr. DiNizio and Mr. Griffiths both agreed that after
town meeting they would try to get an extension, once Mashpee
committed to build the school . The one problem Mr. Griffiths did
mention is that if the school did not open in September 1996, he
