Mr. Goggin asked Mr. Griffith how they arrived at the
number they were at, was it looking at $94 .00 per square foot for
the Marstons Mills Middle School, comparing a junior and senior
high school and adding inflation? Mr. Goggin felt that the only
opposition between the Finance Committee and the Building Committee
was $94 . V. $106. per square foot.
The Committees discussed the site work. Ms. Greelish stated that
she had thought with the Building Committee, having hired a project
manager that the architect cost would have gone down. Mr. Griffith
explained that they were asked to figure out what was in the best
interest for the town and if bidders were disqualified the town
needs to state why and cost cannot be the only issue.
Ms. Sullivan asked it there had been an environmental impact study
done? Mr. Griffith replied that by Law they did not need to have
one done.
Mr. Griffith was asked about the $900,000 that was set aside for
contingency. He responded that it is a contingency for things that
are unforeseen at the time of the design.
Ms. Greelish asked about a swimming pool? The cost of a swimming
pool is not included in the $27. 7 million. It .may possibly be up
to the townspeople to decide if they want this or not.
Mr. Polito, Building Committee, stated that the Building Committee
can always give back money to the town, but if they do not request
enough from the beginning you cannot get more state aid. They feel
it is essential at this time, so that by June 1st. a design can be
presented to the state so that the town will be put on the list for
state reimbursement. Ms. Greelish stated that if the town
appropriated $22 million, the town would still have a great high
school built. Mr. Hauck asked the Finance Committee if they would
be happier if the money was appropriated for the architects only
and then there could be another town vote? The Finance Committee
would be a lot happier if there were plans. There feeling is that
the town is being asked for a blank check and that the cart is
before the horse in this instance. Bill Matiros suggested having
a provision that if there was money still available that it would
be turned back to the town. Mr. Griffith explained that the
Mashpee Middle School had excess money returned to the town and it
is still is sitting in fund.
Tony Gallo left the meeting at 9:15PM.
Mr. Ferriday asked who would control the money for the building?
The answer was the Building Committee. Mr. Ferriday stated that
the discrepancy was between $27 . 7 million and $23 million. The
Building Committee wants to air on the high side and the Finance
i
i
