Page 3
business manager; $56,758 science and art revision; and $64,004
additional supplies.
Dr. DeMoura explained that the School Department would like to have
a high school principal come on board very shortly so that he/she
may assist the Building Committee in preparing a program of
studies, etc. The School Department would also like to hire a
business manager to be available on a day to day basis to crunch
numbers. Dr. DeMoura explained that he is not available to do that
every day. There was a question asked of Dr. DeMoura if any of the
new charter schools or parochial schools would impact the projected
enrollments for Mashpee? Dr. DeMoura indicated that the new
schools should not make any impact to change enrollments
drastically. Mr. Goggin asked how many students were enrolled in
Cape Cod Tech? Dr. DeMoura indicated that they were down to 54.
He noted that the School Department was projecting approximately
300 kids for Falmouth High School next year. Mr. Goggin asked
about custodial subs. Dr. DeMoura stated that these were college
students who mainly did custodial type work in the summer.
Carole Dunivan stated that she and the School Committee would not
sit there and go lane by line with the Finance Committee. She
insisted that Dr. DeMoura knows better than anyone what the figures
should be.
Mr. Goggin asked about kindergarten supplies and special education
costs. Dr. DeMoura responded that in the past kindergarten
supplies always fell under elementary level and they were broken
out this year. He also mentioned that the School Department was
expecting one extra special needs student next year. He stated
that there is a lot of tutoring going on. Ms. Gibbs stated that
the Town of Mashpee is responsible for special needs students from
the age of 3 to 22. It is not just handicapped children, but
children with all types of behavioral problems. Dr. DeMoura
mentioned that they were expecting a small increase of 4 children
in the pre-first level.
Ms. King asked why there was such an increase in the math program.
Dr. DeMoura responded that the Department is looking at new
materials. He believed that the numbers may be a little high, but
are necessary. Ms. Gibbs stated that children are just not
prepared in math and science when they get to Falmouth High School .
Ms. King asked why this was not a big concern in FY94? Dr. DeMoura
indicated that supplies had to be reduced drastically. Ms. King
then suggested that he should prioritize his requests. Mr. Goggin
asked if Dr. DeMoura felt he would live within the budget through
the end of the fiscal year? Dr. DeMoura stated that they were
doing their best.
Mr. Goggin asked what becomes of students after graduating Falmouth
High School? He asked if there were statistics as to what
colleges/universities they attend, whether it is academic or sports
