Board of Selectmen <br /> Minutes 3 <br /> January 1.1, 1999 <br /> APPOINTMENTS AND HEARING <br /> Public Comment: <br /> None at this time. <br /> !CranbeM Bog Update: <br /> Michael Minor of the MMR Installation Restoration Program and Tom Simoniak <br /> of Jacobs Engineering were present to update the Selectmen on the FS-I <br /> Quashnet River Bog Separation Project. <br /> Mr. Minor distributed a handout of the pilot test project that proposed to <br /> implement and evaluate the performance of an extraction, treatment and <br /> discharge system to intercept EDB contaminated groundwater at the leading <br /> edge of the FS-1 plume. <br /> In addition, the pilot bog separation project will protect human health by <br /> reducing the risk from EDB in surface water, groundwater, and/or cranberry <br /> crops while minimizing impacts to the ecological systems informed Mr. Minor_ <br /> Existing cranberry operations are expected to be protected in this process. <br /> Water management structures will be constructed to decrease the potential <br /> risk of crop contamination by separating the river channels from the commercial <br /> cranberry bogs. <br /> In phase one of the project proposal, extraction wells will be installed. A <br /> berm will be constructed on the eastern side of bog K2 and along the north side <br /> of bog K6 to separate the upwelling of the groundwater containing low Ievels <br /> of EDB. The third phase of the project will expand the southeast side of bog K6 <br /> to mitigate for loss of bog K5 and berms. <br /> It was noted that the one year pilot test project will not influence the native brook <br /> trout habitat. A public meeting is scheduled on Thursday, January 21, 1999 in <br /> Town Hall to further educate the citizens on this matter. <br />
