2
Board of Selectmen
Minutes
March 18, 1999
FY 2000 Budget Review:
Mr. Whritenour, Town Administrator indicated that the budget contains
two separate line items in the area of Medical Insurance for the School
Department and Town Government.
Additional funding has not been calculated for new hires within the
School system. The projected cost is $100,000 for twenty-four new
employees. It was noted that custodial service should also be incorporated
into the number of new hires in the area of Medical Insurance.
Ted O'Rourke,President of the Mashpee Teachers Association read aloud
a statement in support and commitment to education. (enclosed)
It was noted that the Town Administrator's initial consideration for an
override consisted of$750,000 for the School Department and $250,000
for general Town Government expenditures and improvements. The
budget for the Town is balanced at this time due to the Selectmen's
decision to eliminate the $250,000 in funding for the Town.
The Board of Selectmen is anticipated to recommend a budget in
conjunction with the Finance Committee later this month. The Town
Meeting warrant will be finalized on March 29, 1999.
A Town Meeting ballot question will be prepared for the Selectmen's
approval to provide for an override. Town Counsel will be consulted with
respect to this regard. The override question-will appear on the election
ballot of Saturday,May 8, 1999.
The House of Representatives Education Board is scheduled to visit the
Town in April. The School Department requested the Selectmen's
assistance to lobby for increased educational funding to support Mashpee
schools.
