t _
i Board of Selectmen
Minutes
April 6, 1998 3
Question: what will this do to the surface levels of Wakeby Pond? Mr. Martin said DEP will be
` sure they don't impact the levels of the Pond.
Question: it is admirable that DEP is anxious to clean this up. His idea would be to put more
wells in with smaller pumping rates for each. To discharge, he suggests re-injection wells on the
outer edge of the plume to force the water into pumping wells.
Mr. Martin said there would be tremendous access problems. Also, the more you pump in and
out it will ultimately contaminate the clean wells. They can look at those suggestions and do
more modeling.
There is rigorous Federal monitoring required for discharging back into the pond.
Questions: when discharging back into the Pond, won't the water be a different temperature? It
doesn't sound like a good idea. Mr. Martin said they will look at that. This is a balancing act
and they are looking at all the issues.
Mr. McGonagle asked how long this will take and will they be checking the fish?
Mr. Martin said this type of contaminant tends not to accumulate in fish. The process will take
30-40 years, depending on the system.
Greg Taylor is concerned about the significant distances between monitoring wells.
Mr. Martin is talking with the Mashpee Water District about filling in some of those gaps.
Greg Taylor said not everyone shares DEPs confidence that nothing is going under Mashpee
Wakeby Pond.. There is a concern for up welling, on the east side by cranberry bogs, what those
springs might be up welling.
Mr. Martin said they will continue to monitor.
Mr. Martin explained the DEP will be taking comments for 20 days from this Thursday. Anyone
can submit comments or questions.
Question: why won't DEP go after 47 parts per billion(in the part of the plume being cut off)?
Mr. Martin said it is access and logistics of Cove Road. They have to determine if there is a risk
to the Pond first. The idea is not dead, the system can always be added to. This is not a drinking
water source and they have looked at the impact to human health.
Everyone is welcome to the Sandwich Selectmen's meeting on Thursday night when DEP will be
making this presentation again.
Selectmen Caffyn explained the Town has a consultant who will be looking closely at what is
being proposed.
Public Comments will be held until after the scheduled public hearing.
APPOINTMENTS AND HEARINGS
7:15 Liquor License public Hearing- Chef D's Wine and malt License
Mrs. Mason read the public hearing notice.
