Board of Selectmen
Minutes 2
June 8, 1998
APPOINTMENTS BE
Firg Station Building Committee -Project Status Report: (continued)
The Fire Station Building Committee is expected to bring forth a formal proposal
to the Board of Selectmen regarding the site selection of the future Fire Station
sub-station. It was noted that two acres of the subject property will be utilized
for the South Mashpee station.
Mr. Vaccaro indicated that the design schematic for the renovation and
rehabilitation of the Fire and Rescue Station was re-designed by the project
architect in an effort to conform to budgetary constraints.
Growth in the local economy has determined increases in general construction
costs and unit costs per square foot informed Mr. Vaccaro. As a result, the
budget estimate to renovate the existing main station is approximately $3 million.
The basement option which is not included is estimated to cost an additional
$250,000.
Mr. Vaccaro indicated that the committee is presently considering options to
increase the square footage of the facility by utilizing space above the apparatus
bay area.
Selectman. Caffyn suggested the Board consider scheduling a mini town meeting
to bring this matter before the voters. In addition, cost estimates relative to the
impact on the tax rate should be considered.
It was noted that a $3 million dollar project would have an impact of.29 cents or
S42.00 on a median value home of$143,000 for fifteen years.
Mr. Vaccaro indicated that the committee's first preference is to rehab the
main station, but due to budget constraints, it is more economical to move
forward with the construction of a sub-station in South Mashpee which has been
estimated to cost $1.1 million.
At a minimum, it is necessary to expend $218,000 to repair the ventilation
system, replace the overhead doors, address life safety issues and the termite
infestation at the main station informed Mr. Vaccaro. It was noted that Town
Meeting approved the expenditure of$30,000 to address ventilation issues.
