Board of Selectmen <br /> Minutes 4 <br /> September 22, 1998 <br /> ApPODLEhdENTS AND HEARINGS: <br /> Public Hearin _Golf Realty Advisors Inc.: (continued) <br /> Selectman Marsters opened the public hearing to obtain comment. <br /> A local resident stated that the land is within the boundaries of the National <br /> Wildlife Refuge. The Friends of the Mashpee National Wildlife Refuge <br /> strongly oppose a golf course within the boundaries of the refuge. <br /> John Gehrier asked of proposed green fees. Mr. Bates responded by <br /> stating that residents will pay a fee of$40 during peak season, which is <br /> June 15 - September 15. The fee may be reduced in the off season by <br /> $5 or$7 for residents. Green fees for non-residents are projected to cost <br /> $45. - <br /> Chuck Green, a member of the Conservation Commission and Mashpee <br /> Wampanoag Tribal Council voiced concern with respect to nitrate contribution <br /> and the proximity of the Town watersheds. <br /> Mr. Green indicated that the Town of Mashpee voted to set aside the <br /> property for a wildlife refuge. The 200 acre site should protect our aquifer <br /> for our source municipal well site explained Mr. Green. <br /> Alice Lopez asked if the Town reviewed other potential sources of revenue <br /> other than a golf course proposal. She also voiced concern to the protection <br /> of the wildlife. Ms. Lopez stated that the Town should seek other forms of <br /> revenue that would benefit a higher percentage of Mashpee residents. <br /> In addition, Ms. Lopez stated that the proposed golf course would create <br /> competition with Quashnet Valley Country Club. <br /> Ed Baker indicated that the land was once referred to as the Town Forest. <br /> He expressed concern to the condition of the Mashpee River and Popponesset <br /> Bay watershed. A golf course facility would cause further damage to the river <br /> explained Mr. Baker in opposition. <br />
