Board of Selectmen
Minutes 4
September 22, 1998
ApPODLEhdENTS AND HEARINGS:
Public Hearin _Golf Realty Advisors Inc.: (continued)
Selectman Marsters opened the public hearing to obtain comment.
A local resident stated that the land is within the boundaries of the National
Wildlife Refuge. The Friends of the Mashpee National Wildlife Refuge
strongly oppose a golf course within the boundaries of the refuge.
John Gehrier asked of proposed green fees. Mr. Bates responded by
stating that residents will pay a fee of$40 during peak season, which is
June 15 - September 15. The fee may be reduced in the off season by
$5 or$7 for residents. Green fees for non-residents are projected to cost
$45. -
Chuck Green, a member of the Conservation Commission and Mashpee
Wampanoag Tribal Council voiced concern with respect to nitrate contribution
and the proximity of the Town watersheds.
Mr. Green indicated that the Town of Mashpee voted to set aside the
property for a wildlife refuge. The 200 acre site should protect our aquifer
for our source municipal well site explained Mr. Green.
Alice Lopez asked if the Town reviewed other potential sources of revenue
other than a golf course proposal. She also voiced concern to the protection
of the wildlife. Ms. Lopez stated that the Town should seek other forms of
revenue that would benefit a higher percentage of Mashpee residents.
In addition, Ms. Lopez stated that the proposed golf course would create
competition with Quashnet Valley Country Club.
Ed Baker indicated that the land was once referred to as the Town Forest.
He expressed concern to the condition of the Mashpee River and Popponesset
Bay watershed. A golf course facility would cause further damage to the river
explained Mr. Baker in opposition.
