.F Several months ago had a brief meeting with the Fire Department and have incorporated
suggestions re parking, etc. in the proposal.
• Pursuing grant money to put some type of solar system in the building.
• Minimizing clearing; utilizing existing curb cut.
• 10 foot or less area light fixtures for access drive and lighting of pathway up to each unit. All
separate entries, other than accessible unit.
Richard commented that one thing HAC has taken on is the idea of doing green buildings to the
extent that their funding sources will allow. He said they just finished a 40-unit development in West
Barnstable and they really learned a lot of what they can and cannot do and funding limitations. He
said these buildings were all energy star rated buildings. He said they will try to do the same thing
here.
Landscaping
Brian Kuchar addressed the Committee and distributed copies of a conceptual landscape plan and
Site plan that were reviewed and discussed.
• Site is off Old Barnstable Road and Brian explained the existing drainage condition.
• Only making slight change in attempt to minimize grading work.
Moved 3 buildings closer to each other to try and preserve as much of existing woods as
possible.
• Septic system will be Nitrex system.
• Leach field under parking lot causes drainage problems so they chose grades to manage and
direct runoff.
• Underground utilities.
• Nothing of high-value quality on site; they will use existing trees.
• Mixed shrub-type trees to be used in the parking lot area.
• Foundation plantings along building foundations will start with native species and some —
_ --- —perennials-and grass— — — — — — — — — —
• Brian showed pictures of another site to give an idea of what the landscape would look like.
Questions:
Sheldon Hamblin asked whether the trees lining the driveway would impact fire apparatus coming
down the driveway. Brian said "no", because we're moving them 20 feet back. Sheldon pointed out
that at 20 feet the Fire Department would need 13 feet up. Brian said this is something that can be
addressed.
Sheldon Hamblin asked if the leaching field under the parking lot is designed to support fire
apparatus. Richard responded "yes".
Sheldon then asked about the alarm system for the buildings. Richard said they are looking at local
detection. He said they are looking at code requirements and unless they can find funds for a central
system they'll use local. Sheldon pointed out that Town By-Law requires that anything over one
dwelling unit has to have a fire alarm system reporting to a central receiving station.
2
