Minutes of the Personnel Board's Meeting of April 30, 1982, coast.
Bob made reference to a book which lists salaries for every town on the Cape.
Selectwoman Thomas asked if it were the Elress, which lists' the population in
a town and the number of people in each department. She mentioned a survey
which Joe Murphy was talking about costing $2,500 for comparison work. She
thought that it would definitely be a time-consuming project and a concentrated
effort on everybody's part.
Bob said that he thought the name of the book was: "Mass. Employees Association".
Selectwoman Thomas made reference to a few positions which need more money than
what they are presently getting such as the town accountant's position and the
superintendent of streets position.
Caroline said that the Personnel Board looks at the education and/or work exper-
ience when interviewing an individual for a position.
Selectwoman Thomas mentioned that the Superintendent of Streets is asking for a
10% increase as a man under him would be getting $25 less than he would.
Caroline commented that he knew the salary when he was hired.
John commented that the Personnel Board has not had dealings with setting salaries.
Selectwoman Thomas suggested doing a comparison of other towns.
Bob again made reference to the book which lists the salaries from other towns.
. Curtis said that he was in favor of the book.
Selectwoman Thomas replied that she would check into it.
John suggested doing the comparison study and looking into the difficulty of some
jobs.
Selectwoman Thomas referred to the fact that there has been a lot of turnover in
personnel throughout the town some of which we understand why which is due to the
fact that we are not paying them enough and there are a number of duties under the
job title.
John said another reason was that we are not always competitive with the private
sector.
Selectwoman Thomas said that we are talking about salaries set by the State.
Bob asked the secretary to contact department heads and employees with a position
description questionnaire.
Selectwoman Thomas asked if it was agreed to postpone Article 31 indefinitely?
Caroline said that she would postpone the article.
All the members were in agreement.
. Selectwoman Thomas referred to Article 19 and said that it would be postponed by
Kevin O'Connell.
-2-
