1 491 <br /> Interview of John Brewster 1 / / <br /> Chairman Sullivan reviewed the salary of the Harbormaster position <br /> $16 ,000 annually ; $1 , 500 per month March through December and $500 <br /> per month January and February . Chairman Sullivan told Mr . Brewster <br /> that the department consisted of three Waterway Assistants plus <br /> Assistant Harbormasters . <br /> Chairman Sullivan also reviewed Mr _ Brewster ' s resume noting that he <br /> lives in Marstons Mills and was' discharged from the service (U . S . <br /> Navy) December , 1988 . He also noted that Mr . Brewster is currently <br /> the Assist . Manager of Walden Book , Cape. Cod Mall and that he is a <br /> Captain of a boat ( Tuna 6 ) out of Hyannis . Inhis ,position at Walden , <br /> Mr . Brewster indicated that he currently works nights and days as the <br /> shifts vary . He said that he is presently an Asst . Manager with two <br /> other assistants over a staff of ten additional , employees . - Chairman <br /> Sullivan explained that theposition. is .very demanding in the summer <br /> with less hours required in the winter . Mr. Brewster indicated - that <br /> he had discussed this with his boss and they were willing to grant a <br /> leave of absence from Walden ' s for six months and that they would take <br /> him back part-time in the winter . <br /> Mr . Brewster was asked if he had C . P . R. , Advanced Lifesaving? He re- <br /> plied that he has First Aid from the Marine Medical Course and is en- <br /> rolled in the next course of the American Heart Association to be re- <br /> certified in C .P . R . Chairman Sullivan asked if he had any experience <br /> as a Harbormaster : Mr : Brewster replied that he worked with various <br /> Harbormasters on the West Coast and overseas : He said that he assisted <br /> the Admiral of the Seventh Fleet Staff with moorings and small boat <br /> traffic . <br /> Mr . Brewster was asked if he was familiar with Mashpee by--laws . He <br /> replied that he has reviewed the town ' s by-laws and . is familiar with <br /> them , <br /> Mr . Brewster was asked about his boating experience? He said that most <br /> of his experience has been in power boating - 38 ' Viking and that he <br /> raced J-24 ' s in high school years . <br /> Mr . Brewster was asked if he is familiar with waters in Mashpee? He <br /> replied that he chartered a boat and fished off Mashpee last summer in <br /> which they spent two days . He said that being a navigator in the <br /> service and a Captain , he knows the charts . <br /> Ben indicated that the Town was looking for someone to stay . He asked <br /> Mr . Brewster if he could get along on the salary? Mr . Brewster said <br /> that the reason he applied is that he wanted to be a Harbormaster for the learning experience . He said that the training , education of <br /> working with various agencies might help him in the future . He said <br /> that he was willing to sacrifice and get what experience he could . <br /> Discussion centered around areas dredged in Mashpee . Also , Mr . Brewster <br /> was asked to comment on his feelings about mooring permits _ He said <br /> that they should be strictly maintained as they do not want people <br /> creating a hazzard to waters . The #1 rule is to avoid a collision . <br />
