GROWTH REVIEW COMMITTEE MINUTES
MEETING OF TUESDAY, OCTOBER 19, 1982
MASHPEE TOWN HALL
Present: Chairman Richard Terry, Sel. Jean Thomas, Michelle Stone,
Richardson Jonas, Harold Collins , Leonore Anderson and Sel. Chester
Garland.
Chairman Terry convened the meeting at 7 :30 p.m. and suggested that
the Board discuss priorities.
Dick Terry said that the apartment idea seems to be a way to reach some
goals as opposed to putting up some houses. However, he asked the ques-
tion: "Do we want apartments at all in Mashpee?" He suggested that the
Committee think it through as well as Possible before committing them-
selves to mapping and plans.
Sel. Thomas stated that where the town is concentrated is pretty well
spoken for and asked if we were being diverted about to something we
can' t do anything about?
Chm. Terry said that he is le,-arjing toward housing bedroom community --
suggesting mapping out a zone with a mix mentioning the Market Place in
Hyannis as an example.
Sel. Thomas mentioned that there isn' t a combination such as that in
Mashpee.
Chm. Terry asked if the town wanted to go for a commercial type area or
living space apartment area suggesting that we should try and see what
we want to do as we need to tell the consultant the way in order to give
him some direction so that he can carry out our wishes. The apartment
thing is not really what we are looking for. we have to decide what kind
of apartments, how many bedrooms and if we want that at all. We must
verbalize some priorities.
Harold Collins said that the town has plenty of living quarters for elder-
ly people such as condominiums (a method of ownership) mentioning Summer-
wood and Massasoit.
Chm. Terry suggested a combination zone and broadening our base inrcertain
areas; however cautioned the committee to go slow if they are not sure.
Sel. Garland talked about defining apartments and mentioned the place
across from the melody Tent in Hyannis as being horendous and then men-
tioning a beautifully designed building for the elderly in Wareham Center.
He stated that there might be a need for house apartments restricted to
elderly which would be accessible to the shopping center.
Sel. Thomas asked if it would be put behind New Seabury Shopping Center?
Sel. Garland suggested working with Fields Point. He mentioned that he
would not want to see apartments where there would be three or four
stories of brick as there should be something tastefully done which would
be apropos for the area.
