Although
the Mashpee Select Board supports the efforts of the Town of Sandwich to provide affordable and attainable
housing, there are deep concerns regarding the environmental impact of the proposed Village Green project.
The Village Green project is located on sensitive land with inadequate wastewater plans. The project
includes the construction of a commercial solar farm planned to remove 23 acres of vegetation that would
irreparably harm water quality in Mashpee-Wakeby Pond and the entire Popponesset Bay watershed.
The Town of Mashpee will request the voters to fund in May, the design of a North Mashpee-
Wakeby sewer collection system including an alum treatment to address water quality issues as the Town
moves forward with Phase 11 of the wastewater plan. In support, the IMA working group has discussed the
potential to collaborate for the sewer collection system.
In concern for more environmental reviews such as a Development for Regional Impact (DRI) it was
disclosed the Cape Cod Commission does not take a position on affordable housing projects.
Motion made by Selectman Weeden to support the draft comment letter carrying the weight of all
Select Board members to be read into the record at the Town of Sandwich public hearing.
Motion seconded by Selectman O'Hara.
VOTE: 4-0.
