d <br /> MASHPEE PLANING BOARD MEETING MINUTES <br /> WEDNESDAY , JULY 20 , 1994 <br /> TOWN HALL <br /> Members Present : Tana Watt , Tony Ferragamo, Dennis Balzarini , <br /> Richard Martini , Pat Coffey , Spyro Mitrokostas <br /> Also Present: Tom Fudala, Eloise Graveno , Charlie Rowley <br /> EXECUTIVE SESSION <br /> Presentation by U . S . Fish and Wildlife Service re : proposed <br /> Mashpee National Wildlife Refuge . <br /> Tony explained to the representatives of US Fish and Wildlife <br /> that the Board members are familiar with the project. <br /> The representatives explained the mission of US Fish and 'Wildlife <br /> is to protect the fish and wildlife of the nation . <br /> They congratulated Tom Fudala on the document he prepared , he did <br /> a spectacular job and it will save them a lot of time . <br /> Presently , they are doing an environmental assessment to <br /> establish the refuge . They have received $75 , 000 from <br /> Congressman Studds for planning . <br /> This project will incorporate a lot of agencies , DEM, town <br /> Conservation Commission . Of the 3 , 000 acres , the majority is <br /> already reserved for conservation . For land that is not <br /> protected, they will attempt to buy it . <br /> The end of September they will have a draft environmental <br /> assessment for review by anyone who wants to see it . They will <br /> advertise that it is ready for review . The final assessment will <br /> be ready in December and when that is approved , they can then <br /> start to buy land . <br /> Once established , they will have to manage the area together with <br /> all the other groups involved and still keep with the mission of <br /> the US Fish and Wildlife service . <br /> In the process of scoping for the environmental assessment , they <br /> have met and will be meeting with many groups to get input. They <br /> would like input on what land they should and shouldn 't <br /> incorporate . They explained Tom Fudala is thinking of expanding <br /> the boundary to include more of the Quashnet river watershed . <br /> They will be starting a newsletter soon to keep everyone updated . <br /> Tom asked what other organizations they are talking to? <br /> They met with Barnstable County Commissioners , Cape Cod <br /> Commission , Falmouth Planning Board , Cape Cod Economic <br /> Development Council . They will be holding a joint meeting with <br /> all the major land owners , Tribal Council , Falmouth Rod and Gun, <br /> club, MA. Fish and Wildlife . <br /> Dennis asked if they had written information to give to people to <br /> show the benefit of the refuge? <br /> Fish and Wildlife will mail the draft assessment to the abutters <br /> 1 <br />
