07
Town of Mashpee Sewer Commission
sw
16 Great Neck Road North
Mashpee, MA 02649
The Chair then closed the Public Hearing.
Public Comments
There were no public comments.
New Business
The Chair asked Ms. Fisher, the Water Quality Coordinator to provide an update on the Fresh Water Pond
Committee. Ms. Fisher mentioned the handout she presented to the Commission with respect to her
vision of the mission and structure she sees fit.
The Mashpee Freshwater Ponds Committee will focus on protecting and preserving Mashpee's freshwater
ponds by ensuring clean water, conserving biodiversity, and promoting sustainable practices. The
Committee will work closely with the Select Board and Town Manager to support responsible stewardship
of these natural resources for both current and future generations.
Ms. Fisher then read into record the proposed Mission Statement as follows:
The Mashpee Freshwater Ponds Committee is committed to supporting the Select Board and Town
Manager in their efforts to safeguard Mashpee's freshwater ponds as invaluable natural resources. Our
mission is to protect and preserve these delicate ecosystems by promoting clean and healthy water,
conserving their rich biodiversity, and advocating for sustainable use practices that respect the balance
of nature. By fostering responsible stewardship,we aim to ensure that these ponds remain thriving
habitats for wildlife, enduring sources of beauty, and vital community resources for recreation and
education. This work is dedicated to preserving these treasures not only for today's residents but for
generations to come, emphasizing the critical importance of ecological integrity and long-term
sustainability.
The Chair also noted that the initial proposal was not to create a new Committee, but that the existing
Mashpee Wakeby Management Committee and broaden that group's focus to not just Mashpee
Wakeby, but all other kettle ponds. Ms. Fisher stated that part of the structure of the Committee would
be by having a representative from each great pond (8 core members and 2 members at large). Ms.
Fisher then reviewed her recommendations and shared what would then be presented to the Select
Board.
Mr. Lyons then requested a portion of the Town Website have the details and information of this
Committee and that a Select Board liaison be assigned. Ms. Fisher stated that the Select Board will
assign the liaison.
The Chair commended Ms. Fisher on her efforts on putting this together.
Mr. Meader recommended that a letter of support be submitted by the Commission to Town Manager
and Select Board. The Commission accepted the recommendation and will submit a letter accordingly.
Chair's Report
The Chair reminded everyone to review the Select Board's meeting from December 16, 2024 about the
Mashpee Wakeby Diagnostic Study and also suggested that they review the APCC state of the waters
report that just came out in the Mashpee Enterprise.
