The Commission worked closely with Mashpee staff and
the DOT, as this area is under their jurisdiction. Goals are to:
1. Improve safety
2. Reduce congestion
3. Accommodate all users (currently this area does not serve pedestrians or bicyclists)
Commercial properties surround this rotary, which sets this rotary apart from others. There is no formal
accommodation for sidewalks. This was a large study that extended past road lengths on most outlets
towards other intersections. Traffic volumes and crash data were also collected.
Between 2012-2016:
120 total crashes
25 injuries requiring medical personnel
Majority were rear ends
A Roadway Safety Audit was performed. Collision diagrams were prepared, crash reports reviewed, as
well as conditions at the time of crash (day vs. night or if the road was wet), and field visits performed
with the DOT for conditions and signage. There were some replaced signs and in 2019 there was
public outreach with engagement. One popular piece of feedback was regarding the holiday themed
light display in the center open space.
There are challenges for pedestrians, and many question whether the rotary is one lane or two. Due to
the largeness, people travel at a higher rate of speed. The summer months create congestion with
tourism.
Some alternatives were to keep the same style but retrofit to improve safety measures. Other options
were smaller scale more traditional, bridge or tunnel, or incorporate a traffic signal. The Middleboro
rotary retrofit was shown as an example.
The Commission and MassDOT were suggesting a multi model accommodation with mixed use paths.
The Town of Chatham has a mixed-use path on the outside of the rotary with two stage crossings.
There was strong support for a retrofit and for multi accommodations. Overall, it will improve safety with
minor property impacts, and it fits with the overall community character.
The report is still on the website at: yr%v.c,,,' ecodcoirnimissli6riii.cir(/irrm$: II eeir:Q it
The DOT initiated a long-term project based on some of the feedback for a rotary retrofit and public
engagement.
Ms. Waygan inquired if the Commission was aware of the sketch that the DOT provided, showing the
shared path going through green triangle areas inside the rotary. It was surmised this sketch was just a
2
