Town of Mashpee Sewer Commission
t
16 Great Neck Road North
Mashpee, MA 02649
Mr. Meader acknowledged the concerns and explained that a fencing plan had in fact been incorporated
into the agreements. He noted that efforts had been made to address these issues before the property
transfer and indicated that the matter would continue to receive attention moving forward. He also
explained that while some replanting had been delayed until the project's punch list stage, residents
were welcome to add plantings on the outside of the newly installed fence. He asked only that they
notify him in advance and share their plans, since underground mains run beneath the area and roots
could interfere with infrastructure. A Summerwood representative confirmed they would bring the issue
back to their board for further consideration.
Mr. Meader then addressed odor control and safety measures, noting that all equipment currently on-
site was padlocked to prevent tampering. However, he cautioned that unlike the Mashpee Neck Road
site, it was not possible to enclose the entire property with fencing. The Mashpee Neck site bordered a
state highway, and safety regulations prohibited installing fencing that would obstruct drivers' sight lines
at intersections. He explained that a similar setup along Route 28 would create dangerous blind spots
for vehicles pulling out.
As an alternative, Mr. Meader described efforts to minimize visual disruption. One option under review
was painting equipment with a color known as "Go Away Green," a shade developed by Disney that
blends into surroundings and reduces visual impact. He emphasized that while this solution was not
perfect, it might help soften the pump station's appearance.
Public Comment regarding Summerwood Final Paving
Douglas Brown, property maintenance manager for Summerwood Condominiums, expressed gratitude
for the thorough research, noting the findings matched the recollections of past board members. He
confirmed that Summerwood would coordinate with their project supervisor to arrange for any
supplemental paving work as needed.
Bob Naylor, a long-time Summerwood resident, also thanked the commission, calling the clarification an
important step toward resolving what had become a "patchwork" paving situation. He shifted focus to
the pumping station area, pointing out that while some vegetation had been cleared, there were still
dead trees and safety issues. He emphasized that with 30-40 children in Summerwood, the exposed
mechanical equipment near the station posed risks, as curious children might try to tamper with
controls. He echoed Judy Gray's earlier call for fencing, adding that landscaping improvements would
also help integrate the facility more harmoniously with the residential setting.
Residents continued pressing for safety measures. Summerwood resident Judy Gray reiterated her
concerns, pointing out that the control panels on site were not locked, leaving them accessible to
children. Mr. Meader explained that most controls were designed to operate from inside the building
and were not intended to function when left on local/manual settings. While unlikely, he acknowledged
that errors could occur and committed to reviewing the situation further. Ms. Gray maintained that
regardless of paint color, the equipment remained unsightly and unsafe in a residential area. She urged
that fencing be prioritized.
Chair Harris closed the discussion by thanking residents for their active engagement. She acknowledged
that while the town could not always implement residents' preferred solutions in full, the commission
took their comments seriously and sought compromise approaches whenever possible. She emphasized
